Anybody watch the History Channel's "Most Extreme Airports?"

I haven't finished it, I have it on tape, but it's pretty wild so far. Sixth or seventh on the list was Gibraltar. Extreme and unpredictable winds but what really got me is that it has a FOUR LANE HIGHWAY going across it about midpoint. Can be seen on Google Earth at:

36 09' N
5 21' W

They lower railroad style barriers whenever a plane is coming or going which must not be all that often compared to a major airport.

I landed in a bean field once. I gotta say that was the most extreme airport for me. I was use to a mile long runway and once I turned final I was too high and very very fast..... goodtimes.

About 20 years ago, I flew wih a friend down to Club Med in Huatulco, the second southernmost State on Mexico's west coast (it's above Chiapas, which is next to Guatemala), in a big 747.

The "international airport" was a big landing strip. No control tower or anything.

Just a grass hut, and the guy inside it simply radioed up to the 747:

"OK, LAND !!!!"

It was shocking but funny at the same time....

Oh man, I'll say, in a 747 no less.

Check this one out. Saba, in the Netherlands Antilles, a 1300' runway (the Nimitz class aircraft carriers are 1092' long):

Watched the rest of it last night. Great show, a little slow at times.

While in the Air Force, one of my favorite things to was to ride along for "combat approaches" in a C-141. The purpose of them is to keep your altitude at a point where small-arms fire is less likely to hit you, and be able to visually inspect the runway for damage.

So it flies parallel to the runway, then corkscrews down for a landing behind where it just flew over.

When sitting in the back of the flight station during final approach, all you can see out of the front windows is trees because of the approach angle. Awesome.

Yep you called it. Those are some of the most incredible landings (and takeoffs) that i've seen.

Here is my favorite though

Holy crap, that plane was flying sideways. I wonder how the eventual landing went.

The only dicey landing I ever experienced was undramatic except for hitting the runway so hard I was amazed the landing gear could take it. This at normally staid Oakland airport. It's a tad strange as you're over water just before touchdown.

Yeah, they stretched it out quite a lot - reviewing the airports already covered over and over. Oh well.

I've read about those corkscrew landings in Iraq. Pretty wild.

Damn, there's no over or under-shooting THAT runway, is there?

Cool show. I’ve been into a few shown. Brings back some memories.
Some of them I think the show exaggerated just how bad they are. But then, compared to a big flat slab of concrete….

We call the extreme x-wind landings: “pedal bending”.
So long as there’s pedal travel left….you're good.

I’ll try to dig up some pics of my favorites over the years, if you’d like.
I know Darby has some real nasty ones here somewhere.

Cheers -
Shelby

Sure Was! My only landing experiance was Chicago's O'Hare. Coming in over lake michigan and in a 737 right after a larger jet. Felt like beeing a kid goin down stairs on your butt in a trash bag I thought it was fun but everyone else had a death grip on there seats!

I fly R/C planes, we often have strong crosswinds here in KS. Takes alot of rudder correction to sideslip with the wind to make a parallel landing! Kinda a fun challange!

Leeds in the UK had some fantastic shots! St Martin is great, very cool LOW approach landings! And take-offs there are great watching people getting blasted into the sea

I remember a nasty x-wind landing at O’Hare once, years back.
I was all crossed up in one of the TOS Citation IIIs. Had four clients in the back.
For some reason (call me silly), I blurted out a hardy “YEEE HAW !!” coming in over the numbers.

TOS (John and Darby) got a few nasty letters from the clients over that bit of: “…lack of professionalism…”

I'll I had to say for myself (at the time anyway) was: "Oops...sorry...wont happen again."
