Ford F550...

I'm kind of thinking about getting a new F550 and maybe having New Haven body put a dump body on it. I probably won't buy one for awhile though, just doing some research. How are the new Ford diesels?

How are they as trucks? Can you load them up and work them pretty hard? I would go with a one ton, but frankly thats not that much. I'm worried about overloading it. The 550 should have a better frame and suspension.

Also I want something that can tow a Cat 304 + trailer with ease, so figure 13k pounds. With a one ton thats right at the limit. I want to be able to tow a little machine, so it has to be able to handle up to 15k pounds. I also don't want a dog, I want something that will pull up the hills and can tow at 60mph without straining.

I'd buy a regular dump truck but I don't want to get a CDL, and I want a truck I can drive everyday, a 550 is only slightly larger than a regular pickup. I'm not looking to do a lot of site work, I just want something that can carry a couple of tons of process or top soil.

6.4 isn't a proven engine yet. I'd be careful.

I was wondering the same thing, since my wife's 2000 F350 is starting to get some age on it. She uses it in her horse business, which includes hauling a heavy trailer with up to four horses, up and down interstates full of 18-wheelers, on hot summer days. Needless to say, reliability is a priority. When we bought the truck, the plan was to replace it every 4 or so years, so she would always have a good truck. The problem with that plan is that some of the subsequent generations of Powerstrokes had such horrible reliability problems and she really wants a Ford. Whenever we go look at new trucks, some expert would say that 2000 was one of their better models and we should stick with it.

That was a long-winded way of echoing aklim's suggestion to wait and see on the new motor.

By the way, her F350 is a very nice truck. The only knock I have on it is that the differential went out at about 110,000 miles, which seems a little weak to me.

Thats the big question, will Fords new diesels be any good?

Your almost better off going with the gas motor, but they don't have the torque that the diesel does.

You have the 7.3 which is a tried and true motor. You have the Forged Metal Rods. I have Powdered Metal Rods. PMRs are good to 400HP, IOW, Forged rods are more durable. You have the 17 degree swash plate HPOP which is better than the 15 degree one. The only thing you can do is upgrade your trans cooler to the 6.0 one which is about 3 times larger than the one you have. Been there, done that. When your trans goes, get one from Brian's Truck Shop and he fixes it when it breaks for free. Again, BTDT. I am hard on my vehicles so I know it will break. In 2000, you don't have the dreaded diode. So life is good.

I would lean toward a 4500-5500 Ram (Dodge). The 6.7 Cummins engine in that application (305HP) has been much more troublefree than the pickup engine and has been out for about 4 years now. You also get the Aisin 6-speed auto which I believe has a 180,000 mile warranty. A normal person can also work on this engine, sort of like an old Mercedes. Or, you can beta test Ford's third new engine in seven years. The last two didn't do too well. GM is not an option, as they're out of the MD truck market. There's another reason to consider a Ram- no glow plugs.

The 6.4 is a proven engine. It has proven to drink fuel like a V-10, and requires removal of the cab for much more than light maintenance- far beyond the means of even an avid DIY'er.

Hard to say. The 6.0 was designed to meet emissions and was a bust so they came up with the 6.4 which is, IMO the stopgap till they had time to build their own In House motor aka the Scorpion. The had a spat with International which built the 6.0 a bit back over warranty claims among other things. And now you are looking at buying their "stopgap" motor? You must have some brass balls.

Stick to the 4500 , 5500 dodge or sterling. We mount utility trucks on them and the guys say you dont even feel the weight. Much better ride and the cummins runs circles around the 6.0,6.4 motor

6.0 warps/cracks heads and the emissions is crap and we've had reports of the 6.4 hydro locking due to injectors. Piston exited through the block.

6.7 ford scorpion motor is supposed to be the fix, but do you really want to be the guinea pig?

The fuel mileage on the ford is 8-10 and the dodge is 10-13
The V10 gas loaded is 5-8
