Web-Based Email for the Sandbox?

I'm a recent arrival to "a base" in Afghanistan. The good news: we have internet here. The bad: my the ISP here doesn't work very well with my email provider. I use juno.com, and it works just fine in the States. Here, it took me an hour to read my email yesterday, and I managed to send one message today (and I'm not sure it went through). I just loads super super slow or not at all. Other web sites (like this one) work just fine. Juno didn't work very well when I was in Iraq either, but this is worse.

Anyone have any suggestions for a cheap (preferably free) web-based mail I could use to communicate with the folks back home during my deployment?

Recently I was talking to a neighbor who was in Afghanistan for 3 months, his recommendation goes to yahoo, he was able to use yahoo messenger as well without a single issue. They have messenger built in into the mail box so you don't need additional application download.

Be safe there whatever you do. Look twice before you make any move.

Gmail, hotmail, Yahoo Mail.... Of the three, i would use Gmail because it has some pretty cool features and lots of space.

You can also set Gmail up to pop your Juno account and forward all Emails to your Gmail in-box and also respond as your Juno account. So there would be no need to give out a new Email address to anyone.

Gmail and SKYPE -and you will be set. Both Kids used it over there with great success. It's also important to know that some web based companies, brands, etc restrict viewing there sites from certain countries. You be in one of those countries.:)

Hey Skippy,
Hope all goes well for you there!! I have a few Australian friends over there at the moment. Keep your head down ! If you or one of your buddies get a chance to sink a round into a taliban, give them an extra one from me !!!
Every decent person on the planet supports what you are doing !!!

Cool. I'll probably end up doing that. Another option is to try another ISP. I'm using an MWR computer with Spawar providing the service. Some of the guys in the barracks are going to be getting WiFi through a different provider. I don't have a laptop, but I may be able to bum some usage off a buddy here and there.

Forget about the internet. Take care of your own a$$. My oldest son fought there and was injured. He received two purple hearts. War is NOT playtime young man. :)

Gmail acquired. It doesn't seem to be forwarding from my other account, but I only set it up about 12 hours ago. I've notified most of the "important" people about my new address already anyway.

Thanks for the help.
