Home HVAC question.

The York central air system in my house has developed a leak in the evaporator of about 1# of R22 per month. The unit works fine (when fully charged), and is 19 years old. I don't know the model of the air handler. Here is the question- Is it typical to replace the entire air handler, or would a replacement evaporator core be available?. I know a whole new unit may be more efficient, but even at worst, my electric bills to not exceed $100/month, even last month. The compressor/condenser are the same age and are working fine, no leaks there.

it can probably be changed if you find the right repair person.

If the leak is positively in the evaporator, I would replace the indoor unit. The cost of the newer R410A systems are quite high. If the outdoor unit is rust and corrosion free, it would be less expensive. It will be a risk knowing that the compressor is a 19 year old unit. The biggest problem will be finding an honest company willing to take on a small job. With any luck a knew air handling unit or the correct evaporator unit will match the existing dimensions. (not a problem for a good sheet metal mechanic) This reply is based on a simple box airhandler and not a furnace with AC.

Put in leak detector stuff. Check with black light and solder it shut!

That would be a good option, but the air handler is in the attic, and may have to be removed for repair, at which point you might as well replace it. The other unknown for me is whether is uses a copper or aluminum core. It is also possible, as I look as some parts websites, that the evaporator core is not a replacement part.

Its not rocket science. The right repairman could build a new box in which to install a generic evap unit if necessary. It just has to have air blow through it and be compatible size to the outside unit.

I was briefly looking on ebay and there are York evaporator assemblies available as replacement parts. Next step will be to visit the attic and find a model #.
