iPhone 4 - The Irresistable Impulse

I have a perfectly good iPhone 3G, but am dying to throw money away and get an iPhone 4. Tell me why buying one is a great idea, or if I'm just being the spendthrift American consumer with more dollars than sense...

Brian Carlton 08-10-2010 11:09 AM

I have a perfectly good Motorola Razor...............and I need an I-phone because.........???

thayer 08-10-2010 11:16 AM

Wait until they buy it for you on your contract renewal.

Smart phones have become, for their heavy users, completely incorporated into their lives. The RAZR is a great phone, but it won't sync with my corporate email or act as my gps, or handle music for my car via bluetooth, or ...well, you get the point.

the only reason to buy one at retail is that its going to add to your quality of life......to the tune of the $$ you would spend.

I want an iphone too....Verizon will eventually have it....right?!?!?!?!?!

I have some inside dope on that situation and they might choose to avoid it........depending on the success of Droid.

Jobs wanted a small fortune from AT&T to get the i-phone........so much money, in fact, that it will never be profitable for AT&T. Verizon can't justify that payment to Apple and might just stick with the Droid...........far more profitable.

I'll give you $50 for the old iPhone 3G.... Mine is slowing down radically, and I really don't want the 4G till they fix the problems.:D

MTI 08-10-2010 12:19 PM

Wait until "Black Friday" in November. Last year, I bought two 16GB 3GS through the AT&T refurbished program for $50 each. They had warranty and qualified for AppleCare extended warranty. Phones were absolutely flawless and work great.

Kuan 08-10-2010 12:23 PM

Listen to me. I'll tell you why you shouldn't get it. Ready?

You there?

Can you hear me?

Dang musta dropped signal.

Call you back in a bit.

That may still be true in some areas, but AT&T has greatly improved service in many areas with the addition of addtional towers and bandwidth. Users in cities like San Francisco, who were particularly conflicted over iPhone ownership, have seen vast improvement in service, so as with many things . . . your results may vary.

Kuan 08-10-2010 12:32 PM

It really sucks when you're driving on a highway and can't get data coverage. I mean wtf is that ATT?

Craig 08-10-2010 12:46 PM

I have a 32GB 3GS that still works fine for me. One of my kids has my old 8GB 3G, which is running pretty slow on iOS4, so I think I will buy a iphone4 for her when they are easier to find. I will probably wait until next year to upgrade mine (hopefully there will be a 64GB model by then).

Jorn 08-10-2010 12:54 PM

Worked at the AT&T building Down Town LA last Sunday on the 30th floor: zero to one bar.

iwrock 08-10-2010 12:55 PM

Actually, Apple admitted to the 4G having service issues when the antenna was blocked... To the point where it would drop calls. :/

With that said, the new iPhone has a very bright, crisp screen, amazing camera, and is pretty quick. Not to mention it looks pretty damn good too.

Craig 08-10-2010 01:15 PM

ATT is a pain if you are in a marginal service area, in other areas it does better than Verizon. At the moment, both my iphone and ipad have decent "edge" service in the middle of no-place, TX; the data is slow, but it works and the voice is fine.

You can't hang around all of the cool people with that old Razr...

okyoureabeast 08-10-2010 02:27 PM

I love the iPhone, but I hate not having a hardware keyboard and well I am pretty happy with Verizon :(

That's about it though. Come on over Apple to Verizon with a keyboard and I'm set!

MTI 08-10-2010 02:35 PM

Keyboard interfaces are just learning curve issues. Coming from the Treo platform last year, I tried the original Moto Droid last year and found that the slide out keyboard was merely "ok" considering the penalty in weight and moving parts.

Currently, I'm looking for a BT travel keyboard for the iPhone OS like I used to have with Palm OS devices. That combination made traveling sans-netbook/laptop a viable option.

Well... I still think my old Razr was one of the sexiest gizmos ever crafted... If I could only figure out a way to get it to make the Star Trek communicator noise when it opened, I'd probably still be using it...:D

RIM has a pretty good setup when it comes a keyboard. I loved my old Treo 650 and my curve was definitely a step up from my old mogul.

I assume you will see a Verizon iphone when everyone ends up GSM 4G in a couple of years. I doubt you will ever see a keyboard, I'm surprised they included a button.

POS 08-10-2010 07:42 PM

I just got rid of my year-1/2 old iphone 3G for the new 4; much, much faster. Do it for that alone. But, the screen is better, the functionality is a bit better, and now my battery will go for two days fairly heavy usage where my old 3G was good for only a day.

Then again, you should only do it if you can get the new contract price.

PaulC 08-10-2010 07:53 PM

32GB ordered.

I know, The Onion talked up the dearth of buttons on a video of theirs. It's pretty funny.

I expect a cdma iphone too. Hopefully sometime soon.

MTI 08-10-2010 08:37 PM

A CDMA version will likely only appear if Apple has engineered the chipset to be installed in the same as space as the GSM. CDMA is not an overly popular standard.

Craig 08-10-2010 08:47 PM

I don't see a CDMA iPhone, verizon is going to drop it in a couple of years so they would have to make a duel phone for the transition. Also, CDMA doesn't support voice and data at the same time over 3G, I don't think they would put up with that limitation. I think they will sell an unlocked 4G model once everyone is on the same standard.

TheDon 08-10-2010 08:51 PM

I want a droid..the R2-D2 version comes out soon

One of my kids likes keyboards (texting), and she really likes her blackberry (whatever the latest model is called). It seems like a good phone, but the menu interface drives me nuts; I can't find anything on it.

E150GT 08-10-2010 10:16 PM

Blackberry Storm 2 has to be the sexiest phone around. I was gonna get one and stay with rim, but they just are too far behind. I got the droid x cause it can do anything any other phone can do and is not a huge restriction on daily stuff like customization, using it as a thumb drive, music, and call quality. Maybe if jobs would loosen his death grip on the apple kingdom I would go over to the dark side. I do miss some things about my BB though... Apple? Never!!!

pawoSD 08-10-2010 10:52 PM

I have a Motorola W755 flip phone, and all it does is make/receive calls. Costs me $9 a month. Why waste money and time doing stuff on a phone when you can use a 20+ inch screen at home? And I am an IT tech.

Not trying to say you are wrong, but you are not always at home either. I have a laptop too, but I find it cumbersome to haul around a 16" screen Hp. My 4.3" Motorola does such a fine job.

MTI 08-11-2010 12:32 AM

It makes me feel sad for IT techs. :D

Ditto. People need to focus on their inner source of happiness instead of trying to find it in these over-hyped diversions.

I heard that walking while texting will soon be illegal. :)

Pretty ironic statement on a Mercedes-Benz ownership forum. ;)

LOL. Its all good. I tease my kids about their dependence on portable devices for all their socializing. Their phones were intended for emergency use only, but they somehow keep sneaking in the upgrades. My son once had to go without his for about a week, during which time he said he felt remarkably 'free'. I told him thats how people used to live.

Well, I spend most of my time away from home, and I am frequently working in facilities that will not give me internet access (security issues). I use both an iphone and an ipad constantly for mail and internet access. I also use a tethered laptop on a regular basis. All this stuff is relatively cheap, and not having connectivity is unacceptable.

Hatterasguy 08-11-2010 11:23 AM

My friends use their Iphones for facebook and fooling around. I can't justify spending $100+ a month on one, plus $700 for the phone to fool around online while I'm away from my desk. For what my friend spends on his Iphone and plan every year he could lease a car.

I'll keep my flip phone.

Dude, you don't have to buy the diamond encrusted, rich Corinthian leather trimmed model . . . :D

There are also reasonable data plans for the less text addicted.

LOL, I could rent a house for my monthly data cost; about $300 at home plus another $3-400 for all my mobile stuff. Cost of doing business, plus toys for the kids.

Not when I priced a plan out. I'm paying $51 a month for the most basic Verizon plan with texting.

My friend gets a deal through his company but he is still paying $25 more than that for his Blackberry.

Last I checked unlimeted everything from Verizon is about $100 a month.

MTI 08-11-2010 05:58 PM

Think of It A an Investment, Of Sorts

Presumably iPhone users are better at getting their kicks in real life. But the chart still leaves the greatest question of our time unanswered, “Do attractive people buy more iPhones, or does the iPhone somehow make you more attractive?”

ps2cho 08-11-2010 07:47 PM

I have a 3GS. I don't see a point in paying $300 for facechat or whatever crap that is?

I'd rather spend that $300 towards the new Sony NEX-5 Camera :)

Maybe I should have read that before giving my daughter an iPhone?
