Shut up a smoke alarm

I have a really overbearing smoke alarm in my apartment that will scream at the slightest smell of smoke.

It's happened three times and I'm almost tempted to wrap a condom or something around it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for shutting it up? I can't disconnect it as it is wired to the fire system.

We have one that used to go off when ever you cooked a slice of toast. We moved the toaster.

You could try a piece of plastic over the sensor.

Since the best way to shut up a screaming smoke alarm is to fan it, get a small but powerful electric fan and direct the air towards the smoke detector when you're doing something that creates smoke. The fan, on high setting, will push the smoke away from the detector enough to not cause it to go off.

Whatever you do- DON"T DISCONNECT IT. Try buying a new one that is of better quality, as apartment owners tend to get the cheapest ones they can find. Had one in my house that would go off when there was the slightest bit of smoke from the oven or toaster in the kitchen, but not a peep when the woodstove in the same room would billow smoke out occasionally. Replaced it with a quality new one and all is well.

Let me rephrase this question:

The smoke alarm is wired to a larger fire system. So I can't disconnect it or get a better one.

I only smoke dope in my room so no problems there layback, but my aussie room mate is pretty funny. He goes to La Trobe if that rings a bell for ya.

I've been running fans underneath of it, but it doesn't do much. The only trick I have is to open both windows and let the cross draft pull the smoke out. This is fine, but when it gets cold here I'm going to be pretty pissed having to do it every day.

I may try putting a condom over top of it. I know those little dudes may not see any action until their expiration date.

even though it is wired in, there may be a battery. when it fails, or begins to, it will become noisy. Check for battery.

There's a fire alarm on the second floor of the apartment, the stove is electric, and i'm not too afraid of such an occurrence since the smoke alarm is wired to the entire apartment building.

It's actually an on campus apartment so no worries about a fire. The room is riddled with sprinklers so my belongings will be soaked with black rusted water before fire touches them.

Self powered with a back up battery to this large networked Siemens based fire panel located in the basement next to the laundry room. Part of the reslife "Sign here please" paper is to never touch the smoke alarm.

Here's a pic of the first floor. It's pretty nice. You can see the smoke alarm just barely in the upper left hand corner of the picture.

Only thing to worry about then is if they need a scapegoat when there is a fire. If you are not concerned, wrap that sucker.

Yeah you are right. I'll wrap it and unwrap it when I cook. No need to needlessly make some insurance adjuster happy when they discover melted plastic on my smoke alarm.

Cut a rubber ball in half and prop it over the smoke alarm with an extenable painting staff. You can sell the other half of the ball to the dope smokers next door.
