Rant: Musical Performances

I went to see Natalie Merchant perform (of 10,000 Maniacs fame from the 90's) a few ago. $50 ticket via Ticketmaster by the way.

I was expecting her to sing the old songs that made her famous. Instead, she sang "new" songs from her new album. She sang some old ones towards the end (maybe when she realized half the audience was asleep) and the crowd came alive.

I began to realize that the whole performance was to promote her new album. I felt like a sucker. Live and learn I guess.

Most groups make most of their money today from live shows.
Recording sales, CDs, downloads, etc don't make near what they used to. And promoters and managers have "global" deals which means they get some part of all the action: recording sales, concerts, merchandise, etc.

Or so my youngest who is in the biz tells me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Nation

So, unless you go see a group like the Stones that hasn't had any new hits in 20 years, expect newer and younger acts to focus on the newest stuff on tour, or else end up in Billy Joel's discount rack like another can of peas.

Edit: Confession. Who the heck is Natalie Merchant?

Bands have toured to support their new record since there have been records.... I would much rather go see somebody who is progressing in their musical career than someone who is reclining on their laurels... Guess the lesson is to check out the bands new material before going to see the show, unless you feel like the artist can do no wrong, then go often.

I'd rather see Natilie MacMaster. Bet you would too.

I love the Eagles...got a couple of DVDs from their reunion tours.

Want to see them when they come to Dallas, but when the stage row seats are $795 a pop, I have to balk...

Saw Jackson Browne recently. Great show. Good mix of new and old.

I saw "The Pretenders" a few years back. Chrissy was only doing 'new' songs.
She got about half way through the third one, realized the audience was not with her, waved her hands and stopped the band! I was close enough to see her face as she realized "Oh *****, I am a NOSTALGIA ACT NOW!" She went into 'Brass in Pocket" and the crowd went nuts!
She was not too happy, but she gave a good show.

I think she even mentioned being a nostalgia act from stage!

Holiday season is fast approaching. If TSO comes your way, they are a great, great show. Went last year and will go again this year.

The Toby Keith concert was a giant Ford ad.

Also some groups play a whole set of other groups' songs. Whats up with that?

Isn't that they whole point of them going on tour, to sell their new music?

Now that's interesting.... she stopped in the middle of a song.

Yes that is abundantly clear to me now. But boy do I miss my $50 and 3 hours of my life.

I will, however, watch the fake Beatles again if they come back into town. They were good. Plus there is no chance of singing 'new' songs.

She was the lead singer in a group called 10000 Maniacs. She used to be pretty hot.

I used up a lot of tissues watching her videos (not that I had a cold or anything)
