cummons converson for ford super duty

I have a 2004 dodge diesel that has seen better days. I really like the motor but prefer the ford truck. Im wondering if i could by a nice ford truck with a bad motor and install a cummons motor. I want a manuaL gear box so would i use the dog trasmission or the ford? any other thoughts or ideas?

'How much money YOUSE got?

It's Insane to me that someone has not come up with a "Plug and Play" kit
to ReTrofit the "Undertuned" version of the Cummins engine Dodge uses for
the F150 series.
(Yeah,Yeah BEEFIER SUSPENSION NEEDED ON 3/4 TON ford.)
'Given the POTENTIAL to utilize 5 or 6 CONSECUTIVE dodge chassis with one
Cummins engine.

One of the members over at oilburners.com has done the conversion. He did it will all oem Ford parts--it looks "factory"
You can catch him on the Ford IDI thread on that forum. If memory serves, his screen name is Darrin Tosh.

How about in a chevy?

I believe all three now use the same new venture six speed manual in their diesel trucks.

Check out destroked.com on this very subject.

AFAIK, Only Dodge used (past tense) the NV 5600 six speed. Ford used a ZF 6-speed, and GM used to use the NV4500 5-speed, it was almost the same as the Dodge unit, but did not have a synchronized reverse. Now, Dodge uses the Mercedes G56 transmission, and Ford and GM are strictly auto only. NV Gear went belly up a few years ago, and the transmission is no longer produced. According to the TDR forums, the MB transmission is excellent.

I'm pretty sure at one time for at least a brief shining moment they all used a nv six speed manual on their high torque turbodiesels.

All Ford Superduties with a manual are the ZF6. I believe previous models were the ZF5 but I don't direct experience with that.

I was going to suggest destroked.com as well...

Ford has only used ZF transmissions for the manuals behind their diesels since 88, from 83-87 it was a T19 four speed manual. Dodge used the NV4500, then the NV5600, and GM never used a six speed, just their own version (actually two different versions, one had a very different input shaft) of the NV4500.
Ford and GM both no long offer a manual option.
I wouldn't put a 6BT into an F150, the frame is thinner and the suspension is not as strong as the F250 and F350. A 4BT fits great, though, and you can also get them set up already to fit where a 300-6 came out.

someone once told me that the Dodge Cummins diesels engines are not rebuildable, i.e. doesn't have removable sleeves in the cylinders like mercedes diesels have.

TW, 4X4 Welder is correct, the 5600 was a Dodge exclusive. The ZF unit was only rated for 520 ft./lb., not enough for the Cummins. It's easy to verify next time you see a Ford or GM, look underneath, the ZF is aluminum and the 5600 is cast iron coming in at just shy of 400#. I wonder what manual transmission Dodge will use when they re-enter the HP race, as the 6.7 is already de-rated with the G56.

True, the 4BT's do not have liners but their cylinder walls are made of some of the toughest stuff I know of. I routinely do "in-frames" at 200K and I spend a good 20-45 minutes on each cylinder wall just honing the glaze and truing the bores.

Now mind you, I use an industrial hone run by a 1/2" super torque drill. In comparison, I can true and hone an American V-8 in about 4-5 passes of the hone.

In the 25 years I've been running the "B"s in my fleet I have had only 1 which I had to over-size and that was because the operator ran it hot and welded a piston ring to the cylinder wall which left a "dink" in the wall. Spent about 4 hours on that one just to take it .010" over.

Danged tough li'l power plants.

Haven't had to do a 6BT yet. So I can't really speak for their block materials. All of my 6BT's have well over 250K on them but they are mostly highway miles.

it sounds like the Dodge Cummins diesel is one tough engine.
