I am trying to transfer info from my PC to my Laptop. The info is in Microsoft works.I tried using File>email but that never works. It always tells me that there is an error. What else can i do?

Scan your PC for viruses first, then share the disk. Ensure that "autorun" is off on the laptop, and explore to it.

With shares open, you might want to disconnect from the internet.

I checked for viruses:none.I don't understand Share the disk or autorun and all of the rest. Mat: It's me the 71yr.old computer idiot. If i can get file>send to work without errors things would much easier.

Well, I've never used file>send, so I can't help much there. Sharing the disk means exposing it to the network. I'm assuming that you do have both computers on a network. Is that the case?

If this is Microsoft Windows, certain versions make sharing hard. But you only need to share from one device, either of them will work. What versions do you have? The full name that is. If your OS isn't crippled (some are), sharing is very, very easy.

Home, home premium, professional or ultimate?

PC: Windows xp home
Laptop:Windows 7 Home Prem.

I was afraid of that. It's probably possible, but I have never touched any Microsoft "Home" product. More likely it is possible with the 7 Home Premium release.

Is there someone out there with Windows 7 Home Premium who can tell 420 if he can share a drive, and how you do it?

If you can share the laptop drive to your network, you can enter its address in the XP machine's explorer window (file browser, not internet browser) and just drag and drop files to wherever you want.

Also, I believe that Microsoft client OS's (as you have) come with an ability to "migrate" your files to a new machine. I've never used that feature though, so I can't tell you how it works. Or if it works.

I created a desktop shortcut and attached it to an email to my wife.Then i sent to my email and opened it on my laptop and saved it to my desktop.
And it worked.

Roundabout method, but I'm happy to hear that it worked for you.

You might want to invest $20 in a USB thumb drive. They're very handy for such things.

You can get a better deal if you wait for a sale at a computer store, but you can buy these things anywhere. Wal-Mart carries the 8G model for about $20.

I have a bunch of these Sandisk models - but they come with some bizarre "U3" software that can be removed. That's for installing "portable" applications, something that I'm not interested in and you probably aren't also. Other brands don't have that useless software, but I like the "retractable" USB connector on the Sandisk. No cap to lose. But they're all about the same price.

If you plug one of these things into a USB port, it appears as a disk drive. Drag files to it. Right-click on it in the "Computer" panel, and choose "safely remove" (actually, that's probably not necessary, but I do it) and unplug it. Then plug into another computer and get the files off.

I use them for transferring data, and also for backups of stuff that I install a lot on various machines. Great for sharing stuff with friends too. Copy pictures or such before you visit someone, and they can very easily view them on their computer.

The problem is your using Microsoft Works.

When you say[ Safely Remove] will it stay on my PC or will it be gone? I want to have the same data on both computers.

Are you saying that it will not work.
BTW: I hate this program,i can never figure out how it works. When moving or deleting just one word everything moves with it.
