Battery voltage meter that plgs into lighter socket
Anyone use these gadgets? There's one on dealextreme http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.35152 that has clock/IN/OUT temp/voltage. I'm more interested in the thermometer but figured the voltage meter was a bonus. I also like the display lights.
How do these things work. Do you leave it plugged in 24/7? How accuarte are they in reading your battery power? |

Very useful. I bought 3 on amazon for about $5 each and keep them plugged in all the time. Great substitute for a glow light on a diesel. You can see the voltage jump when the plugs go off. Mine doesn't have a thermometer.

I have one I hard-wired into the Jetta. It comes on with the key in the ACC position, and has batteries as well. The display has started to fade a bit, finally, so I might just have to pick one of these up. The indoor/outdoor temp feature IS pretty handy! I found that the best place to mount the temp sensor outside is right where Mercedes mounted theirs -- on the front bumper, behind and a bit under the license plate. Mien has been pretty accurate!

Isn't this the same one for even less money?
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.27169 Shop around a bit; Amazon, Ebay, etc... may have cheaper alternatives. IIRC, I bought mine at Radio Shack on clearance for ~$7 (not that the $3 difference in price is going to break the bank). EDIT: I see the difference... no clock in option #2.

cscmc1, I checked ebay before I looked into dealextreme. Ebay has this model for $19 (free shipping). There were some cheaper ones, but the temp on'y read in C and I can only comprehend F
Style was sort of an important factor. I wanted one that would nicely fit somewhere on/around the dash area. |

I mounted mine with double-sided tape at the top of the kickpanel, near my left knee. It's unobtrusive there, but easy enough to read from the driver's position. They are indeed handy to have!
