Cheapest auto insurer?

I went with AARP (Hartford) a couple years a go on the advice of an Allstate agent (!) friend who said they were always the cheapest. Got a good initial rate but this year they raised premium by 50%, I had no tickets, accidents, etc. Anyone know who offers consistently the cheapest coverage? I know rates are all over the map with various companies.

Looking ahead, you want a cheap insurer. Looking back (after a rear end, say) you'll wish you had an insurer that gives you a good value when your beloved 123 is totaled. I speak from experience, as do others.

Most people cannot afford the cheapest and best insurer, which is self-insuring by registering with your state.

The only obstacle to do so in Texas at any rate, would be a necessary net worth I would estimate of somewhere between $5 and $10 million dollars - to take on those "better rates." Hardly feasible for most of us working folks.

Insurance is a scam - but one of the greatest and steady paying dividends out there to invest in. But now the government has all of them in their sights. So, naturally, they will need to raise rates where and when they can to try and overcome the drag of more and more gov't rules and regulations.

Geico is the cheapest by FAR from when I was shopping around. Coverage sucks but if cheap is what you want, it works. My rates haven't risen in the years I have had them through multiple cars.

It's impossible to price insurance nationally, since rates are subject to 1) state regulators and 2) specific underwriting risk factors, such as one's traffic violation history, past claims history, etc.

I couldn't get Hartford to give me a quote on my Euro 240D. It's registered as an 84 and 84's won't show up on their VIN search. "It's not an 84, the guy said, it's an 83". Nope, it's a grey market 84....puts me on hold for 10 minutes and comes back to say "we don't insure grey market cars."

I have GEICO and so far in shopping nobody has beaten their rates on our 4 vehicles. I have a 17 year old male driver at home. Even with GEICO when the kid started to drive our rates nearly doubled.

What's cheap for one insured isn't to another. Credit scores not being in the krapper are essential ingredient to come out on auto/car/truck/MC insurance rates. Owning a home for some reason is a plus.

If you think Geico is your friend, you can forget it. They show no favoritism whatsoever, and you'd best keep an eye on 'em - they jacked the rates on my diesel motorcoach a couple years ago to the moon for no apparent reason at all. In nearly doubling my annual premium. In other states I'd get a 10% reduction in premiums because I own stock in their parent company, Berkshire-Hathaway. But not permitted in my state.

Insurance companies at one time were as solid as the government, but no more, since the government is dictating edicts to them left and right -OR ELSE! Janet Napolitano made it clear last week to insurers to watch their step or they get shut down.

EDIT:
Should be Sebelius.^^^

What, or why, was the Secretary of US Homeland Security discussing insurers?

Bizarre - but that's the obama agenda she's (Sebelius) is executing. Insurance companies are the new greedy-scum, (at least to the exec. branch.) and need to be controlled by the feds.

Hard to believe except we're living the American nightmare in more ways than the economy in the krapper.....directly because of this regime.

Are you sure you've not confused her with Secretary of Health & Human Services Kathleen Sebelius? She has been on the press circuit discussing the healthcare reform act and publicizing the part of the plan that penalizes insurers for unjustified rate increases.

I take it that you're in favor of insurance companies being allowed to increase rates without justification? Like GEICO and your motorcoach?

I had Geico but they refused to pay when my son had an accident. Their red tape is horrible.
Went to State farm which were ok but they dropped us like a rock when my daughter had a fender bender. Probably cause they decided to sue us. That was the accident where they arrested everyone in the car because they were all illegals. Didn't stop them from suing though.
Went to Allstate. Their rates are actuall lower than what we were paying State Farm.

insurance is a complicated concept and requires much study and research to grasp insurance concepts. I've noticed there is a major difference in insurance companies and their ratings as well as customer service. I lump auto insurance into four categories:

1. Top Tier companies (only a handful of these, those companies who really do want to provide "white glove service").

2. Middle Tier Companies.

3. El Cheapo.

4. High Risk SR22 companies (for those with three dozen speeding tickets, five DUI's, six collisions with a phone pole, etc etc).

I'm not sure there is much difference in claims paying or customer service between the middle tier and the El Cheapo Companies. perhaps the middle tier offers a slightly better customer service experience. there is, however a definite change when going with a top tier insurer. they treat their customers like GOLD.
