Need 700' Wifi range. How do you do that?

I am guessing you get a strong router but what do you put at the PC end?

I'm not sure you can do that with a single router; do you need a full 700' radius or is it 700' in a specific direction?

To do this you need a high gain antenna that is very directional.

This will do what you're looking for http://www.cantenna.com/

There are instructions on making one out of a pringles can as well, but to extend a base station out 700 feet you'll need to boost the output power which is hard to do as well as heavily frowned upon by the FCC without a license.

I believe you can use two routers (one playing the part of a signal relay) to increase distance...

Probably more than two.

That's a pretty cool product. I have seen people use old Dishnetwork/Direct tv dishes to pick up a neighborhood hotspot.

Just a specific direction. Needs to be bidirectional. There is a router on one end. I imagine I can put a special antenna on that. But I still need standard coverage on that end. Then what do I do for the PC at the far end? Attach that to a router also?

The "brute force" answer is probably a series of routers in "bridge mode" to extend the signal. That would involve buying some hardware. There might be a better way, maybe someone here knows?

Is this in your house, office, or what. It might help to give us the actual scenario so that someone "in the know" can give an educated solution.

For the PC at the far end, you would be best to get a wireless card.

I looked at the Cantenna site and I think that may work. What we have is a house with a standard Wifi router, and a barn about 700' away with a PC. Don't reallty want to run a wire and don't want to pay for a different service there. So need to have Wifi at the barn but also maintain it at the house. It looks like I can get the EnGenious USB device for the PC end. But I am not sure which end I would put the Cantenna on.

For that range, you might need a directional antenna on each side.

1000 feet is too far for Cat5 or Cat6. You could run fiber but that's probably way out of budget.

Depending on the terrain you could put a solar panel on a pole with a battery controller and a WiFi repeater.

How does the phone company do it then? Or the cable company? Could he run another line and use another modem?
