I think it depends on how much luggage you intend on bringing with you. The trunks are comparable between the two but if you bring A LOT of stuff you might end up needing the extra space.

The second factor will be practicality in regards to the law....you're much less likely to speed in the Mercury then the 560SEC (Also there is more knowledge in fixing Mercurys should anything break)

You are correct.
I can assure you that their opinions on the issue were both amazing and amusing. Along with selfish, unrealistic and at times just plain absurd.

But then… they had it… and I took it.

Heck, take the police unmarked car - scare the kids when they see it at night - you look like the HEAT..... Can't tell it's not a Crown Vic.

The unmarked Highway Patrol and Sheriff's Deputies drive numerous colors of the Crown Vic around here - many in great shape. You can't tell right off it's not the HEAT......

I remember the garbage strikes when I was a kid, they built their salaries one pile of trash at a time. I heard they have to battle the rats to take a bin, not my idea of a long term career, more power to them.

I was never comfortable in the city, I like up-state much, much better, except for the snow.

Well I can say that I am doing well considering I am sweating my ass off in a power plant, Not a big change but............

I know I would like my kids to go to school but if any of them are mechanically inclined I have know issues with them turning wrenches for a living either.

There are entirely too many people that think they are above physical labor or don't want to get their hands dirty.

Than to live in New York City

When I was a kid all you heard from your parents was to "do well in school so you don't grow up to be a garbage man or a janitor (custodial engineer). Turns out they're not such bad jobs after all. Combine that with a little side work put away for the future, and you're much better off than graduating college with 200K in debt to find your job went to India or China.

Regarding living in Manhattan for $75K, it's not going to happen. I had a business in Nassau County (second highest property taxes in the country). A "starter" home- a short sale- in Syosset is 400K and the taxes are over 10K. A family of four would need at least twice that Manhattan figure just to survive- figure just their taxes and health insurance costs would be near 3K per month- and we're not even talking principal and interest yet!

Aside from money, I've had enough boring, dirty, repetitive jobs in the past to understand it's worth going to college just to avoid having to do the same mind-numbing task every day for 40 years. That's basically what I would tell kids, more education results in more options.

In my high school the janitor Les was studying to get his teaching degree while working as a janitor. Turns out he made more than the teachers and stayed a janitor. My favorite teacher did lawn care in the summers when he wasnt working, ended up quitting teaching to cut grass and plow snow.
