The War to End All Wars, But Didn't, Is Paid Off

World War I Ends with Final Payment

The initial sum agreed upon for war damages in 1919 was 226 billion Reichsmarks, a sum later reduced to 132 billion, £22 billion at the time.

The bill would have been settled much earlier had Adolf Hitler not reneged on reparations during his reign.

One of the sparks that helped start WW2 is finally going out.

Finally! I foresee "peace in our time". Now, if we could get our cousins across the Atlantic to forgo that small debt regarding the missing tea shipment....

I caught Fareed Z. talking about this yesterday. Funny how much change occurred and continues almost 100 years later.

All very true. The general public (And the entertainment industry) at large tends to always talk about WW2 but very little is ever put forward about the First World War.

Personally I find it a very interesting period of history and it's effect on the world. Reading up on it you find that the attacks in the first world war were far from mindless suicidal charges that we're told about in school. Breakthroughs of enemy trenches happened quite often but lack of good communications meant that they were rarely capitalized on.

Breaking through was hard, it did happen a lot. But the battle plans and communications of the day didn't enable the breaks to be exploited. Battle plans were often strictly adhered to even when better opportunities presented themselves.

The Germans, especially some of the great thinkers like Guderian and Manstein paid attention.

WW1 is really the dividing point between the last gasp of classical warfare with calvary, and soldiers marching in neat rows with long rifles and bayonets; and modern combat.

Revisit Kubrick's "Paths of Glory"

I suspect that we are just about to the end of discussing WW2 as well. Almost everyone who actually remembers it is now gone; there was a lot of discussion associated with the passing of that generation in recent years. People of my generation heard about it from parents/grandparents, my kids generation already considers it to be ancient history.

That's a shame. The affects of WW2 are still with us today and probably will be for another 100 years.

That may be part of the reason we don't "remember" WW1, it's results were pretty much erased by WW2.

The first half of the 20th century may have been a unique period in history. There was just enough technology available to fight a global conflict without killing half the people on the planet.

OK now that we found out that Iraq has gobs more oil than they thought, and the new proven reserve # is predicted to double at least one more time in the next few years. This is due to using current geo maps and modern techniques.

Think we can get them to pay us the tb or so they owe us ??

Somebody on the news said it works out to about 8% of their current proven reserve at current oil prices.

Except of course, that WWII was one of it's results.

Its not really on the same level, France took quite a hit from WW1, they lost a generation.

Yep, and the reparation's which end Sunday were one of the major points that Hitler and the Nazi party used to gain power. Talk about being able to touch history, its right their the last payment is happening in a few days.
