Mexican Pirates Kill American Tourist

Sounds like it is time to send in the Marines.. When in the hell are we going to stop all this stuff?

How is this any worse than being killed by some crazed junkie in any city? Mugged and murdered by thugs?

How many foreign tourists have been killed by American citizens? How many locals have been killed by American tourists?

Don't get me wrong, I think they, both the "pirates" and the criminals I used as a comparison, should be hunted down like dogs and punished but I don't believe there is a case for sending in the Marines.

You do realize that it is perfectly possible that his wife shot him? The fact no body has been found raises my skepticism level. One must admit that this would be a nice recipe for getting away with murder.

This article in the local paper seems to be a lot more questioning than the Fox News typical "Mexicans Are All Bad and Scary" piece:

http://www.themonitor.com/articles/antonio-43258-san-falcon.html

Why did this woman cancel her news conference? Even more interesting, is the fact her husband actually worked for a Mexican company, and that this couple actually lived in Mexico for five years. Hmm.....

I had that thought also. The witness seeing her chased by a boat makes me believe her. Staying behind to distract the attackers to allow her to escape is pretty consistent with typical male behavior. I'd like to think I would have done the same.

I see no account of a witness stating that they heard shots. She claims the boat was firing on her, but there doesn't seem to be any witnesses to that. Anyone could arrange a boat "chasing" her. Also, these people lived in Mexico for five years, in Reynosa, right across the border, one would think they would be more savy than just some tourists who accidentally fell into some pirate trap set by evil, dope smuggling job stealing Mexican Islamo-fascist Communists. No body to show how he actually died. Hmmmm.....

Also, as a hunter who knows what a gun shot sounds like a mile away on a lake, hmmm......

This is classic Fox News reporting:
Quote:
...But now the suspected murder of a Colorado tourist, who is said to have been shot in the head as he operated a Jet Ski on international waters last week, has prompted Texas officials to renew warnings about another species that inhabits Falcon Lake -- Mexican pirates... [emphasis added]
There are no "international waters" on Falcon Lake. Part of it is the US. The rest is in Mexico. Apparently someone at Fox thought that "international waters" was a nice complement to their "pirate" theme.

It's as if Fox News only hires people who are allergic to the complete truth. They are OK with some truth, but just can't quite bring themselves to ever be completely truthful.

I'm with you on this one. I'd like to see some more concrete facts.

Here's a legitimate news story, it sounds like he was shot in Mexico; so the appropriate authorities are the Mexican police:

This story sounds a little strange, could be a set up by the wife. But Mexico is almost a failed state, I wouldn't fish or boat on that lake without some firepower, ie rifles and not deer guns, M1A's or AR's.

When I read the story, it is full of "the sheriff said..". I still do not see any concrete facts. It is also dated 4 days ago.

"Mexico is almost a failed state" is a propaganda perspective, not a fact.

Mexican investigators question alleged pirate attack on Falcon Reservoir

FALCON HEIGHTS — Mexican investigators question whether a McAllen man actually was shot and left for dead during an alleged pirate attack on Falcon Reservoir last week.

Tamaulipas State Police investigators launched their search for 30-year-old David Michael Hartley on Saturday.

U.S. authorities believe Hartley, a Colorado native who moved to McAllen for his job at an oil field service firm, is dead. His wife, Tiffany Young-Hartley, 29, reported they came under fire from suspected pirates Thursday on the Mexican side of Falcon Reservoir.

Rolando Armando Flores Villegas, the local Tamaulipas State Police commander charged with the search for Hartley, said investigators have found no evidence of the purported attack or Hartley’s remains.

Investigators received two sets of GPS coordinates from U.S. consular officials in Nuevo Laredo near where Hartley, 30, was last seen.

But with only the coordinates and no other information, Mexican officials found nothing during an exhaustive search on land and water at least a mile around each reported location.

“We are blind with a stick trying to find him,” Flores, the Miguel Aleman-based state police supervisor who oversees Falcon Lake, said in Spanish.

‘NOBODY HAS FILED A REPORT’

Hartley and his wife had crossed on personal watercrafts from the U.S. side of Falcon Reservoir to view the ruins of a church in Old Guerrero, a Mexican town abandoned when the lake — which spans the international border — was created in 1953 by damming the Rio Grande.

Young-Hartley told Zapata County sheriff’s investigators that gunmen approached them from another boat and opened fire, shooting her husband in the head.

She went back to try to save her husband but fled the area amid a flurry of gunshots as her attackers pursued her into U.S. territory, Young-Hartley told investigators. A third party came forward and told deputies of seeing a personal watercraft speeding back from Mexico while a boat followed behind and its occupants fired at the smaller craft.

But Mexican investigators question Young-Hartley’s account and the coordinates where they spent Saturday searching for evidence of the shooting.

“We are not sure,” Marco Antonio Guerrero Carrizales, the district attorney in Miguel Aleman whose area also covers Falcon Lake, said in Spanish. “We are not certain that the incident happened the way that they are telling us.”

Guerrero questions why neither Hartley’s personal watercraft nor his body — investigators were told he was wearing a life vest — have not been found in the water.

Guerrero said his office has not received any formal report from Hartley-Young — a necessary step to launch a formal investigation — but looked into the matter amid pressure from Tamaulipas and U.S. authorities.

‘THEY DIDN’T HEAR’

The Gulf Cartel and the Zetas — the dominant and once allied drug smuggling organizations in that area — have engaged in a violent turf war since February over smuggling routes into the United States. The Mexican government struggles to maintain security across the region.

The drug war has left hundreds along the Tamaulipas border. That has led state authorities to recently pull police out of Nuevo Ciudad Guerrero — the nearest town to where Hartley was reportedly shot, officials said.

The smuggling routes include territory near Old Guerrero, a city abandoned when the reservoir was created more than half a century ago.

Now, only ranchers and steers populate the abandoned and partially submerged ruins, as well as a handful of anglers who remain along the Salado river, which flows into Falcon Reservoir. None told investigators they heard anything Thursday while out on the quiet waters.

“How would someone know where the incident occurred?” asked Flores, the Tamaulipas State Police commander. “That place is very unsafe. Nobody lives there — only organized criminals. That’s their land.”

Flores has received reports of attacks on Falcon Reservoir, he said. But no one has alleged anything close to what Young-Hartley reported to authorities.

“Since everything is so calm over there, they could hear any noise,” Flores said of the anglers and ranchers in that area. “But they said they didn’t hear any gunshots or anything — and they didn’t even hear a Jet Ski.”

‘SHOULDN’T HAVE CROSSED THROUGH THERE’

U.S. authorities maintain they are working with their Mexican counterparts to recover Hartley’s body.

But the Mexican army captain in charge of Falcon Reservoir only learned of the reported homicide Monday morning when contacted by The Monitor.

During a second interview Monday afternoon, Mexican army Capt. Juan Hernan Espinoza said troops had searched for Hartley.

Brian Quigley, a spokesman for the U.S. Consulate in Monterrey, said officials there have been working with Mexican investigators to find Hartley’s body, without specifying which agency. Neither his remains nor his personal watercraft have been recovered, Quigley said.

“We’ve asked the Mexican authorities to do everything they can in the case and bring it to a close,” he said. “Both sides are trying to find the body.”

Espinoza, meanwhile, questioned why the Hartleys illegally crossed into Mexico on their personal watercrafts without checking in with Mexican customs.

“They shouldn’t have crossed through there,” he said in Spanish.

Jorge Cisneros, spokesman with the FBI’s McAllen office, said agents are working with Zapata County sheriff’s investigators and have contacted the Tamaulipas Attorney General’s Office.

Tamaulipas Attorney General Jaime Rodriguez Inurrigarro did not return calls seeking comment Monday. Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez could not be reached for comment, either.

‘WE CAN’T STOP LIVING’

At the Hartleys’ home in South McAllen late Monday afternoon, family spokesman Ted Burns said Young-Hartley was unavailable for comment while he and local radio personality Sergio Sanchez worked out the details of a forthcoming press conference.

A private security firm Young-Hartley hired recommended she cancel a previous meeting with the press Friday evening.

Burns lamented the lack of information Young-Hartley had gained about the search for her husband, adding that he wanted to see U.S. federal authorities do more to secure the border.

In Zapata, anglers continue to fish the waters of Falcon Reservoir as the story of Hartley’s apparent slaying gained national attention over the weekend.

Robert Amaya of Robert’s Fish and Tackle in Zapata said anglers there “live it day by day.”

“People are still fishing, you know? It ain’t like World War II,” he said. “We can’t stop living. We got to make a living, you know?”

Meanwhile, on Friday — the day after Hartley was reported missing — the profile photo on his Facebook page changed from an image of the couple to a photo of only open water.

Guerrero, the local prosecutor, said he has not heard from Young-Hartley. He said he would like to speak with her.

“Nobody has called to file a report,” Guerrero said. “If we can talk to her, maybe we can conclude that something really happened. But if she starts jumping and falling into contradictions, the investigation could have a twist.”

Bizarre story. I hate to admit that I did not know there was a lake/resorvoir on the border. I just found it on Google Earth, no mistaking it. There has to be some sort of border patrol present - it's only about 1.25 miles across - an innertube at night would be doable - quiet and safe.
