Aww Harry.. Good bye old friend.. :-( :-(

I posted up almost a year ago when he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Well, for the first time in 12 years, I will be going home to an empty home. 8:25am CST, my Gorilla is with me no more and on to a better place. It has just become too much lately with the shortness of breath, the two-hour caughing fits day or night... Even with what I'm going through on my own (cancer treatment) and when his companionship means so much to me, I had to do the right thing for him. He's given me 12 years of what I never did or could repay him for. He's been best friend, councelor and just an all-around great spirit to have been blessed with. Yeah I cried like a baby and I'm sure I will some more. I was with him at the end as I wanted it to be. Through thick in thin, through multiple moves in New Jersey to 31 hours in the car with me moving here to Texas, his spirit will always be with me. It was there right up to the end and will continue to be.. You'll always be my Gorilla, Harry...

Sorry for your loss. Been there and done that five times now. Sounds like you did the right thing as hard as it was.

You have my sympathies on your loss. There's no way to replace a pet's place in your life. It will weigh heavily on you for a long while. 'Gorilla' was a beautiful black cocker! Sweet dogs!

I lost Cinderella, my 17 yr. old black cat 3 years ago Aug. 29th to heart failure. She was losing a step now and then with little strokes. Her last day she just cried out a deep sorrowful meow before going unconscious. I was home at the time. Her body still gasped for breath about five times before she passed. Had her since a 6 week old kitten. That cat travelled with me more miles in my last three cars and two diesel motorcoaches than most people will ever travel by car. That cat knew my routine, as I knew her's. We were great roomates. It's very sad to lose them.

He's my third. My brother brought the first spaniel home just after my dad died when I was eight and since, there was only a 5 year gap without a dog. Cocker # 2 - Jasmine was the buff female and the tomboy of the group. She played ball with the ferousity of a pit bull on the attack yet was as gentle as a breeze. Her best friend was my neighbor's cat. Milo & Otis those two were. Harry was the pretty boy. Would catch the ball one time out of ten, then entertain himself with it, throwing it in the air & chewing on it. A side note, as long as I'm in the DFW area, Parker Animal Clinic in Plano will ALWAYS be my vet. When I'm ready to do this again, that's the only place my pet(s) will go.

Being at work is the only thing holding me together at the moment. I went to the post office as part of my daily routine around 11am. When I got in the car and saw his leash, collar & blankie, I lost it. I will again when I leave here and get home to my 4 beige walls with no Gorilla there.. I told the doctor yesterday at my checkup that I WILL be having a drink or two tonight..

Just remembering all the fun things he did. When he was younger, we had "Gorilla Warfare" - he'd jump on & off my bed the instant he saw I was awake - full sprint from the dining room to my head then back 3-4 times. I'd always find sweat socks around the house, generally under his chin while he was alseep. There were two sets of workout gloves that he "got to" when he was younger. We had a "discussion" after the second set. I got home one day and found the third set out of my gym bag - one in the hallway and one in the living room - undamaged and untethered. Like he was telling me: I can still get to them but I choose to do nothing with them.. PSSSSHHHHHHHHH it's gonna be a long weekend....

My heartfelt condolences, Ronny.

Takes me back to my loss of Annabelle, a 10 month kitten that had feline Leukemia since birth (unbeknownst to me). I was more attached to that cat in 9 short months than any other pet I have owned. The shock of learning that she had less than two weeks to live was unbearable at the time.

Never did get another one............nearly 2 1/2 years gone by now.

About 5 years ago we had to put down our black cocker spaniel Chalo after she had a stroke in the morning. She had some health problems as she got older like glaucoma (had to remove her eye) and she went deaf, but other than that she was in good shape. I walked her every day until she died, it was kind of a surprise that it happened all of a sudden (although she was 12). To make matters worse I wasn't even there as I was in high school at the time.

Cockers are great dogs and I can definitely sympathize with your loss. Although it seems unpalatable right now, getting another dog is the best cure.

One of the hardest things in life is to lose our close friends, whether 2 or 4 legged. I applaud (quietly) at the tremendous strength and compassion you have shown your faithful companion in easing his suffering. Looks like the feline friend will be missing him, too; perhaps you can share your grief together.

I know it doesn't help to hear it now, but at least you didn't selfishly make him hang on until a bitter, ugly end.

Be at peace and embrace the joyful memories of his life well-lived.

Hearts with you.

But always remember the life you gave them and the love they returned.

Lost my Mr. Tuvok just over a year ago. Very painful, but he went peacefully in his sleep. The best final gift he could give was not making me make the decision.

FYI I grew up with a Black Cocker, Satan's Angel the ??, and my first dog on my own was Satan's Angel the 3rd another black cocker.
