01 Civic Limp mode

Quick question. I took a 01 Civic as a partial Trade on my excursion. I think its in a limp mode. it wont go over 20-30 and has almost no power. and heats up. It was working just fine beforehand and the buyers check I had done on it, Came out clean so this had to have just happened. Any Ideas on what it could be? There diddnt seem to be anyhting Amiss with the engine. even in limp mode it seemed to run very well.
I'll stop rambleing and see what comes.

I'm leaning towards a sensor or a clogged Cat. that seems to be the general consensus of everyone I've talked with so far

On my 02 clk 320 the limp mode indicates tranny problem. Hope this helps.

I'm going to borrow a code reader and see what codes were thrown and see what it is.

on an integra I had that was obdI, i was able to make a tool (or buy from honda) that allows you read the codes via flashing check engine light on the cluster.

its just a wire with a harness. If you find out if this works for your car, I can send it to you.

scanners can get complicated if you are not familiar with a model.

Read the codes. On a modern car its just guessing until you pull them.

If you can't draw codes it's the ECU. If it DOES turn out to be the ECU, put an oscilloscope on the alternator output to make sure you don't have a spike in the output. If you do, it will blow the new ECU.
