I'm missing the point of this thread.

Are you talking about guys who kill TV shows?

Scott Bakula was the lead in "Quantum Leap" which ran for a few years, I wouldn't call that a killer. I admit I liked that show quite a bit.

He was also on 'Chuck', the past two seasons. I think they killed him off. Show is still there. He was the Captain on 'Enterprise'. I don't think ti was a good fit. Also, there is uber expectations for any Star Trek series, and the bar has been set higher of late.

I meant actors that are brought in just before a tv series get axed.

If that character who plays "Chelsea" on "Two and a Half Men" stays on as Charlie's serious love interest, that show is going to be outta here in a season!

Of course, Charlie Sheen's off-screen antics may kiil the series a LOT earlier!

Agreed, that series is "played" out, pun intended.

Larry Gelbart, one of the creators of MASH, once said that the MASH story line was perfect for a long running show if the material could be kept interesting.

Since it is natural for people to rotate in and out of any military unit then if an actor was doing well their part was increased and if they were wearing thin they could be 'rotated out'. If a series killer became apparent they could quickly be replaced.

This also keeps Stars from holding up the Producers for more money each time a contract comes up for renewal.

Probably the only Star that could not be done away with was Alan Alda, but I think he was given a piece of the show so he had no incentive to leave. But all the other Actors could be gone in a flash if their character did not work or if they, in real life, could not do the show.

Agreed, sometimes one character can carry a series, and Alan Alda was that kind of Actor.

One series I can think of that was killed by the Star not being there was 'Gunsmoke'. James Arness lived in Hawaii and flew in on Monday's to shoot his part. This did not offer the Director a chance to give him much screen time and secondary players had to take up the slack.

If Arness was having a bad day there was no time for more takes. His contract allowed him to leave town that night.

No matter who the show featured each week the Hero was Dillon, and how can you have the Hero save the day when the Hero is only there for a limited time?

Agreed, did you know that his brother was Peter Graves from Mission Impossible?

All one ever had to do was listen to them talk. Side by side you'd never know they were brothers until they started talking, then you'd have to watch the lips to see which one it was. Weird and almost a bit creepy.
