Mystery Missile

Whats the deal with this?
http://jalopnik.com/5685331/what-mystery-missile-launched-off-californias-coast-yesterday
Why would we, the USA, have to show our ability to launch missiles from a sub? Do you think the North Koreans really missed "Crimson Tide"?
And why would we launch a missile of the coast of LA to show it to the Koreans? wouldn't we launch it somewhere near Asia?
Not to scare anyone, but wouldn't it be more logical that maybe the Koreans got some old Soviet sub working and launched it off our largest city on the west coast, to scare us?

hmmm kinda scary

That's an ICBM from a sub, guessing probably Russian or Chinese in origin. NFW the military can't ID it from the video, they know whats going on, they can also track subs.

Its a political statement, neither country will say a word about it, probably both deny. Its China saying we can get you now, or Russia saying were still in the game.

I hope its the Russians maybe they want to start the Cold War up again, that would be nice.

Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at Harvard University who tracks suborbital launches, said that while the contrail appeared similar to those left in missile test launches, the more likely explanation was that it was simply a standard aircraft contrail that was captured on video from an unusual airborne angle.

One would think NORAD would have tracked the trajectory. If it wasn't one of ours, I suspect the N. Koreans or Iranians.

I don't believe the US needs to demonstrate our capabililities to anyone. After all, we've been lauching ICBM's for close to 50 years.

Not only do they know who launched it they can track subs underwater by the bulge they make in the surface of the water. Whatever skipper did this had balls, was good, and probably a nuclear boat. I highly doubt a diesel electric could stay under long enough to sneak that close to a busy port. Plus they are noisy. I'd be shocked if they were not rushing to where the missle went down and trying to follow the sub out. San Diego is right down the coast and a big Navy base.

Its really not that hard to guess, their are very few country's in the world that could do this, and even fewer that would want to.

N Korea doesn't have the ability, Iran might. Now that I think about it more while the Russians could do it, I don't see a reason.

Right now I'm going to change my mind, I think its Iranian or Chinese.

Well, Ellsworth is wrong on one count - we have done test launches from our boomers over the Pacific in the past. If I told you how I know this, I'd have to shoot you.

Most likely a test launch of one of ours. Can't imagine the North Korean Dear Leader missing the chance to brag his butt off, if his guys had managed to pull this off. Don't see the Chinese or Russians pulling this either - you just don't do tests like this right off the other guy's coast, unless you're begging for a torpedo up your tailpipe or trying to start an accidental nuclear war.
