Airport pat downs

Has anyone had one of these? I haven't flown in a while. Do they really stick their hand where the sun don't shine?

Nope never did and never will, if they tried that crap with me I would leave and find another way to travel. Driving is quite nice.

I just took the train from cleveland to denver; it was actually pretty nice, I got a sleeper car and had a pretty decent steak dinner in the dining car. Used my cell phone and my ipad data connections the whole way, and no-one molested me or my luggage. If you have time, it's a good way to avoid security theater.

There's a ton of recent articles about this.. here's but one. http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2010/10/for-the-first-time-the-tsa-meets-resistance/65390/ You get an enhanced patdown if you refuse the full body scanner.

They apparently reach up your thigh until they meet "resistance" i.e. your testicles.
With women, uh...

So stupid.. note to terrorists, refuse the body scan and hide the bomb in your a-hole... they won't find any resistance. Bet they are laughing it up at what has stemmed from their attacks.

A perspective from Israel: http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/744199---israelification-high-security-little-bother

They have obviously been dealing with this stuff for decades... so perhaps they may know a thing or two.

I had one when I left St. Lucia during the underwear bomber guy.

Yeah it blows. If the security woman working was a lot hotter I probably wouldn't have had the chill go down my spin when she gave me the tap.

Haven't had one yet and don't plan on ever getting one. If it were anyone other than the TSA/Gov. doing this to others they would be arrested and branded a sex offender. I understand the need for security but where do you draw the line? Wouldn't it be better to implement a national type of background/ID system and issue anyone wanting/needing one a card? Something similar to what is required for a hazmat endorsement on a class A CDL or port entry card? Also why are pilots and certain airline personnel excempt?

I don't fly. If I can't drive there, I'm not going.

Glad to see that there'll be more open seats on flights since you folks won't be joining the rest of us in the friendly skies . . .

If you ever fly to the UK don't make a joke to the security staff that your wife / friend / coworker is carrying drugs in their back passage. I think they are obliged to check!

BOHICA, lol.

I just got back from a 4-5 day long driving trip, about 1,000 miles round trip. Here to Los Angeles, visiting my friends, all around there, and then back.

I could have got on an airplane, much faster, and then rented an Enterprise, Budget, Avis or Hertz '10 Mercury Grand Marquis at the airport rental counter, to use, for x number of $$$$$ a day. (Or some small horrible ugly disgusting unsafe sardine can for cheaper)..

But who needs THAT effing cheet, --- body scans and invasive body cavity searches? < snaps rubber glove >

That kind of stuff is for criminal perps that got arrested and is part of the booking process in jail.

Who needs it?

I sure don't, just for buying an airline ticket.

I'd just rather drive my own '09 Grand Marquis, it has lots less miles than most '10 Grand Marquis rentals, plus it's got front and rear Mercury MARAUDER sway bars and a Crown Vic Police Interceptor dual exhaust on it.

Much more fun than a basic, almost identical, rental one.

And in my car, no drunk passengers that had ever vomited on the leather seats either, like in some airport rentals I have had..

Or smoked anything in it.

Maybe if they would just let *me* fly, without all that stupid stuff and make all the midddle eastern women and men that LOOK swarthy, nervous, or sweaty or shifty eyed, nervous, and arab or muslim (and know what a sikh looks like,!) and make those people fly naked under hospital gowns and barefoot, if they finally passed muster, after going through a SEPARATE line just for them, and forget all the political correctness, and stop searching 85 y o blond danish grandmothers, I might fly again.

MAYBE.

Because any of those hate filled terrorists if determined, like in Scotland, could just drive a car bomb Jeep Cherokee to the front of the airport terminal and blow it up.

Or blow up the baggage claim area with their bomb.

I used to have a job that required a fair amount of air travel - I'm kinda glad I dont, but I would have just 'submitted' to the whole-body-scanner-pornographer machine if I had to- No one has yet made a medical case that exposure to such radiation is harmful to a business traveler (a pilot/flight staff- maybe)
My old company paid me 'windshield time' which included arriving for flights 2hrs early. I know that they billed my time at more than $70/hr (engineering/technical support hours) so that could begin to add up (because I'll have to arrive another 2 hours early for the flight home..

I also agree that its a 'security theatre'. But since criminals generally run the gamut of 'pretty smart' to 'illiterate' I'm sure that the TSA will catch a few. (if the criminals were smarter than 'pretty smart', they'd be CEO's =)

I am waiting for small private airplane owners to start whoring themselves out in an attempt to compete with big airlines. yes, running a 6-seat prop. aircraft isnt cheap, but as airfares continue to rise (with hassle/airport wait times) then the small/private plane option will start to look better.

What bothers me most is this - right now, Wife and I drive anywhere- when our kids get older, they are bound to go somewhere on a plane (and risk getting felt up)

Yeah, I had the misfortune to be rubbed by a guy with BO. Even though I was wearing short sleeve shirt he went ahead and rubbed my bare arms. I do not know what the f**k he was looking for on bear arms. If you are gay this would be a thrill I guess.

But it is nice watching women get patted down, I wish they allowed this to be videoed.

It's no problem for the TSA. TSA is short for "Thousands Standing Around."

IMHO until they start using the same security methods as the Israeli's it will continue to be a hassle and relatively ineffective.

Yeah.
And they can begin with some sort of group profiling process.

"While American and European security procedures rely mainly on technological solutions for screening luggage and passengers, Israel’s security philosophy is based on a mix of advanced detection devices and personal interaction with the passengers.

The multi-layer system begins outside Israel’s biggest port of entry — Ben Gurion airport. Cars approaching the terminal are stopped by guards and asked one or two questions, usually about where they are coming from or what is the purpose of their visit. A nervous response, or one revealing an Arab accent, could trigger further scrutiny even before entering the airport.

When walking into the terminal, visitors pass by another set of security agents searching for passengers behaving suspiciously. The next stop for human evaluation is before the check-in counter, where passengers are required to show their travel documents and answer a series of seemingly standard questions from trained security personnel. (Did you pack your bags by yourself? How long did you spend in Israel? What was the purpose of your visit?) Screeners are interested more in the tone and body language than in the content of passengers’ replies.

This is also the point where profiling takes place: While most Jewish Israeli citizens will be waved through after the brief conversation, others, mainly Israeli Arabs and non-Jewish visitors, will be taken aside for lengthy questioning and a thorough luggage and physical check.

An Israeli official aware of the security practices said that profiling is not based solely on ethnic, religious or national affiliation, but rather on a combination of factors that also include behavioral patterns, travel information and previous intelligence."
