Ok fun time guys, see if you can answer this fun problem.

So i have a customer that has an 1980 300D NA.

She came by the other day because she said and i quote "There like a ghost sound coming from my car." It sounds like a ghost and it does it at different speeds but comes and goes.

I figured out what it was, but just wondering what the first 5 posters say they think it was.

BTW when i say ghost she said and explained it sounded like a ghost "yelling".

Good luck guys

top 3 guesses:

1) wheel bearing

2) blower motor not long for this world

3) The radio was left on a low volume and defaulted to an AM station each time she started the car...... it was NPR

Why was this moved ?
Its about a 300D.
Last time I checked there is not a petrol version.
Its a technical question.
There are threads on the diesel forum every few days about unexplained noises.
Is moving this thread appropriate?
Maybe time for who ever moved it to explain !!

why don't you send them a polite PM or in the 'help' forum instead of publicizing your discontent?

jt,
I am not the only one wondering why. By inviting them, who ever it was, to post there reason on the thread, they can answer to all. I am not showing any discontent.

The ghost howling sound is indigenous to my Ford 7.3 Powerstroke diesel before each upshift. With the window down, it's really intense too.

My big, I6 Isuzu NA diesel engine that powered my last coach had a pure industrial sound while under load. No refined sound there.
It had the cutests idle you ever want to hear, I miss that about it.

The Benzes I've owned don't howl. The straight 4s and 5s do groan under power at low RPMs. That may be what she hears. They have an industrial or tractor engine sound to them. I call them tractor, or truck engines. They sound it too.

My 300 ETD moans more than anything as RPMs rise.

The 300SD I owned had a throaty, gutteral growl at very low under power idling up. The 300 ETD, a little of that too. I use it at very low crawl in parking lots, so pedestrians walking nearby hear the car for safety reasons.

Maybe the OP could change the title a little to something like "300D sounds like its possessed; any Ideas on how to fix it?"

This thread appears to have become a bit possessed, maybe the OP has dropped it like a hot potato !!

That link is out of date !! Kindly update it before posting it again !!!
