Survey Shows Reps Smarter Than Dems

Republicans are used to thinking of Democrats as dumb. Democrats are used to thinking of Republicans as dumb. I got bored last week and decided to see if either side is right, so I took a little informal survey. Over the course of a slow half day at work, I got the political affiliations and AFQT (ASVAB score) of 18 registered voters. I used the ASVAB (Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery) as a measure of intelligence because pretty much everyone around here has taken it, and in my personal experience, scores seem to correlate pretty well with how sharp people are.

The sample included 17 Seabees and one soldier who happened to stop by my shop. I encountered 9 Republicans, 7 independents, and 2 Democrats. The average AFQT (Armed Forces Test Quotient) of the Republicans was 76. The average for independents was 72, and the average for Democrats was 56.

Sample size is a potential problem here, as there were only two Democrats, and 50% could not remember their AFQT, meaning my average for Democrats was based on one subject.

Discuss.

You must have been very bored.

LandYaghtLover 11-21-2010 10:14 AM

Great. Time to beat a dead horse again.

edit: add pic that shows one presidential race and the states as a whole voted for. Very limited also.

Lets see: Clinton or Bush? I think eight years of Bush tells the story.

Is that test the one where they show you a picture of a hammer, a screwdriver, and a flower and the question is "Which item is NOT a tool?":D

Wait a minute. Joe Biden said that Obama could not 'connect' to the American people because he was so brilliant. In other words, the American public, according to Biden, are stupid and if it weren't for the 'brilliant' leadership of an admitted disconnected leader, we'd all DIE!

He may be overestimating the intelligence of the american public.

I'd be willing to bet that he's waaaay overestimating the intelligence of the teleprompter in chief. I have never met an intellectual who couldn't hold his own without the aid of a pre-scripted argument.

Then clearly you never met our preceding president.

okyoureabeast 11-21-2010 08:00 PM

Have you considered sending your findings to a peer reviewed journal for review and follow up? :P

I'd say you made the mistake of underestimating the margin of error and a bad pool of potential samples.

Try and ask that question with respondents spread around the country. ;)

tbomachines 11-21-2010 09:06 PM

Not true, I conducted my own survey of 3 people, personally guessed their IQ based on outward appearance (I estimate that this correlates pretty well with how sharp people are) and it turns out the one guy who was a republican was wayyyyyyy dumber than the other two by about 20 points, which gives conclusive evidence towards reps being much dumber than the rest of the world. Sample size could be a potential problem here, since the other two were independents.

I'm glad you found something to do with your time

Craig 11-21-2010 09:53 PM

I interviewed my two dogs and my cat. The cat, who claims to be an independent, is much smarter than either dog, who's political preferences are unclear. When I'm done interviewing my daughter's pet chinchilla I will publish my results.

chinchillas are well known liars; I suggest that you use enhanced interrogation techniques on him in an effort to get the truth. It wont hold up in court, but who cares?:D

From another forum..

AMAZING .. and NOT in a GOOD Way ..

All these people are roaming free in society...

Zogby Poll

512 Obama Voters 11/13/08-11/15/08 MOE +/- 4.4 points

97.1% High School Graduate or higher, 55% College Graduates

Results to 12 simple Multiple Choice Questions

57.4% could NOT correctly say which party controls congress (50/50 shot just by guessing)

71.8% could NOT correctly say Joe Biden quit a previous campaign because of plagiarism (25% chance by guessing)

82.6% could NOT correctly say that Barack Obama won his first election by getting opponents kicked off the ballot (25% chance by guessing)

88.4% could NOT correctly say that Obama said his policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry and make energy rates skyrocket (25% chance by guessing)

56.1% could NOT correctly say Obama started his political career at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground (25% chance by guessing).

And yet.....

Only 13.7% failed to identify Sarah Palin as the person on which their party spent $150,000 in clothes

Only 6.2% failed to identify Palin as the one with a pregnant teenage daughter

And 86.9 % thought that Palin said that she could see Russia from her "house," even though that was Tina Fey who said that!!

Only 2.4% got at least 11 correct.

Only .5% got all of them correct. (And we "gave" one answer that was technically not Palin, but actually Tina Fey)

That was a poll question? I think I would have gotten that one "wrong" as well.

LOL, this sounds like a very credible poll.

One can only hope the US would fix it's energy policy to both reduce coal consumption and increase energy prices to a reasonable level; unfortunately, the current administration is unlikely to do either.

And chinchillas really don't like water. My cat seems pretty interested in interrogating him too, the cat just sits and stares at him for hours at a time.

3 out of 5 American millionaires are Conservative.

Lest "you think it's an asset to be dumb and democrat," the numbers bear out the value of not being democrat.

Average age of U.S. millionaires? I bet those 2 out of 5 liberal millionaires (source?) are indeed very dumb.

I would like to find a source that states those liberals were more likley to have been given the fortune, than having earned it themselves.

You ask about age? The average age of first eclipsing $1,000,000.00 in net worth is in one's later 50s, 57 if I recall correctly.......:D

But really Joe (is that your first name?) i'm seriously interested in this study you mentioned. I can't find anything on google or even through the research databases at my college library.

Given the typical Republican's views on climate change and evolution, I find the idea that the overwhelmingly Neanderthal GOP could ever be "more intelligent" down right laughable. It has become the anti-science and anti-intellectual party, a fact that will become more and more apparent as their low-information content leadership attempts to lead.

Oh I bet you would. I wish I could make up things that magically had studies for them too but as an academic that doesn't really work too well.

Average age of 57 for networth hitting a million does not surprise me. That means on average the group you are talking about is older than 57, which demographically is conservative. Function of age or fortune? Could be either.

I believe I got it from Dave Ramsey's nationally syndicated radio show. Either there or Thomas J. Stanley PhD research.

Well, it's a heck of a lot better than living the lie of liberalism. For liberalism to exist it takes a lot of lying.

After 8 years of lies from Bush and his administration, this is a curious statement indeed. And why all the liberal bashing? You're hardly a conservative.

Makes sense to me. Once you become a balance sheet millionaire, the average age of whatever age you became one is in the past. The threshold age number is 57. Some reach the threshold before 57, some after. 57 is the current number. I'm good with it.

This is why I burned my party cards and registered as an independent. Climate change- It happens every day, unless you live in San Diego. I believe it is a climate cycle. I have pictures from my dads childhood showing light jackets being wore at Christmas........In upstate NY.

By the same token I have seen 43" of snow fall in a 24 hour period on the same date. 32 years later.

Man made climate change no way. (unless you want to count Chernobyl and the 6000 year wait to re habitat that area).

Evolution- yes it happens, how ever if we evolved from a lower species why are the lower species still here? Just foo for thought.
