I dont think it is chemical as much as physical. Aluminum is a porous metal. I think what we're seeing is the mercury migrating through the pores flushing out oxidation and impurities. It appears to be gravitational. I'd like to see if the same action occurs if you placed the aluminum into a pool of mercury.

The mercury (Hg) is dissolving the Al, The Hg migrates along the grain boundaries & so weakens the Al. This is why Hg is prohibited on air craft. Drop a tea spoon full on the floor over the wing & have it destroy the airframe. If you place a small piece of Al in some Hg it will dissolve completely in time. it does the same thing to brass. Its fun stuff to play with but very poisonous, even the fumes from it are harmful.
