My not so fun Thanksgiving

I was awakened at about 1:00 a.m. Friday with a call from my son:
" Dad I've been in an accident."

Seems he went to a party, did not drink, but slid on black ice at 30 mph into another car, dinged the other one, destroyed the front end of his, I think it also hit a post on the roadway.

He is not hurt, the car is totalled.

What amazed me is that the local police immediately impounded the car had it shipped to their favorite tow shop where it costs 120.00 PER DAY to be stored.

The next morning I used the tow dolly to move it to my garage.

If not it would have cost 600.00 before the insurance agent even found out about it.

This was also the day that my chain winch decided to jam, but fortunately the guy in the tow yard helped me out for free, got it on and away to my place.

Needless to say, I was sore this morning but ok.

On the way back from my garage where the car was, my son slept blissfully in the seat next to me.

Kids never change lol

Sorry to hear of your sons misfortune.
Lucky he had not been drinking.
I was once told that you dont really learn to drive properly until you have been in at least on substantial accident.
We can but hope that your lad will learn a valuable life lesson from the experience.

Know what you mean about the police/tow yard racket. Fortunate you had the means to get it home quickly. Just burns my taters sometimes when I think about how they take advantage of others misfortune.

But the main thing is, your male offspring is thankfully unhurt.

When I lived in boston, some of the folks with the police towing contracts were busted for running chop shops. If your car was towed, you might never see it again.

Glad to hear your son is ok!

I think some cops run a side business. Last winter their was a very minor accident in front of one of my uncles projects, a young girl went a bit to fast around a corner and her car slid off the road and tapped a tree. She was fine and it was pretty minor but it hit just right and the radiator busted, air bag didn't go off and other than that the car was drivable. My uncles partner was their and called a tow truck since he knew someone who owned a shop and would give her a good deal. The cops showed up to do the accident report and about 10 minutes later the tow truck showed up to move the car. The cops went off and threatened to arrest everyone if they didn't leave. Naturally they called their own tow truck. Tell me their wasn't a kick back somewhere.

I'd never been in any accident that was my fault until I was 58 yr. old. I ran into my own diesel coach in my driveway. I may sue the owner of that big ass coach in the wreck!

Glad to hear everyone is OK.

$120 a day seems unreasonable for storage.

That's why I towed it asap. I may have found a replacement but my son will be giving me 40 hours' hard labor in my garage!

I remember as a youngster, that "black ice" has a bad habit of appearing at 1:00 AM after those friday night party's

Black ice is to be really feared or respected if you have never been on it. Once on it it may just be luck of the draw what transpires..

It somehow seems much more slippery than normal ice. That is something you never seem to forget about it once experienced. Twice in my life I have personally experienced it. Would not like a third experience..

People that live in hilly areas that have it occasionally especially have my respect. To attempt to deal with it on a slope is well beyond my comprehension. It is murder and very difficult on flat terrain alone.

This is also a senario where unless you are alert enough a front wheel drive vehicle is far more dangerous than a rear wheel drive. You have to get the transmission into neutral as quick as possible or before it is too late. Once a slide is initiated you cannot recover. It is even difficult to stand up on black ice sometimes. I can easily stand on normal ice in comparison.

This event may still be clear in your mind..But I suspect your son has already forgotten about it...Ah...to be young again.

I hit it on my hill once, luckily I was going slow about 10mph, all you can do is hold on and try to keep the car on the road.

Not fun at all, you go from ok traction to nothing. I can't imagine hitting it at any speed.
