Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Vs Subie Outback

What would you rather have for a mainly winter vehicle, mixed hwy and city driving?

Similar age, miles, condition and price:

'96 Cherokee 4.0

'97 Subie Outback

*I'm leaning towards the Jeep.

If you were driving off road I would say the Jeep but I think you would get better gas mileage from the Subaru and it would probably be a little more comfortable on the highway. I have a 1990 Jeep Cherokee and it gets a bit bouncy/jerky on the highway. I do think the Jeep would be easier for DIY projects.

No off road.

I've driven many Grand Cherokee's and they seem comfortable on the hwy - I suppose the Cherokee is a bit more crude.

I heard that subaru's are gay.

The Swede 12-04-2010 01:56 PM

How's that?

Grand Cherokees are different from regular Cherokees.

I drive a '99 Cherokee for work. I drive about 60 miles a day on interstate hwys, mostly, and average about 17 mpg. IF the Jeep has received regular maintenance, they are bullet-proof. If not, you just don't know. They have been out for enough years so that parts are available. I've found it easy to work on. There is enough room to carry everything I need for work.
My only complaint is that the seating is a little snug. I'm 6 ft tall, and I fit, but I could use a little more room.

Heck, either one.

It would be hard to choose, but I'd go with the Jeep, mainly because you sit higher in it, and I am thinking cold, ice, slush, snow - I'd probably go with the Jeep.

I've owned quite a few Subaru's (i am hetero) so I am familiar. As long as he has the receipts for the head gaskets (known to blow on the 2.5L) it is good. keep an eye on the calipers also (known to seize). BUT the price is way too high on that one.

I maintain my father's 97 Outback.

childish for sure. but I will play along, I am not homophobic.

Let me add....
I was VERY impressed with the Cherokee's ability in snow last year. We has to 40" snow storms 2 weeks apart. The Jeep just kept getting it.

"It's Not a Choice. It's the Way We're Built" marketing campaign. Outbacks and Foresters were marketed toward gays.

Anyway, that's a tough decision, you should probably see them both and go from there.

Someone could buy a "Yaris" also:o, i dont think the swede is looking for one though.

vwbuge 12-04-2010 02:25 PM

For strictly "on-road" use in heavy snow I would say the Outback would be far superior to the Jeep.
