A local shop sells those. The general consensus is to buy a very cheap one first and get GOOD at flying it long before you even think about buying a big one. Mistakes and crashes with the larger models are very expensive.

I took my hand at a simulator using an RC plane and even that was tricky. The problem is that the orientation between left and right will change depending on the direction of the plane. That is if your standing behind it on takeoff all is normal. However if you hold still and bank the plane left and make it face you, left becomes right and right becomes left. (Essentially you have to keep your mind focused as if you're actually in the cockpit even when you're on the ground)

Yep, seen that one. What I always found odd is that its almost exactly like that well known real B-52 crash...too much bank and then straight into the ground.

Very cute, but it I wanted to invest that kind of time I would probably just go get a pilot's license and fly myself.

I saw this one at the Toledo SHOT show about 10 years ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52CVrcCydig&feature=related

It hadn't flown at that time. There are four jet turbine engines at probably $3K or more each. It was very impressive just sitting on the stand. Very large.
I do have more than a few planes, buy only smaller sport planes. I have a few .40 and .60 size pattern planes. Weather has turned cold, so not much flying this past month, plus the wind.
I do know a few who compete natianally in scale. Some are making their way up the ranks. A lot of work though. Most around here are into WW1 scale aircraft. We do have a guy who competes in IMAC, and has been winning the past few years in the lower classes. He's only 18, so definately progressing. Way better than I'll ever be.

What gets me is how real they seem. I guess for all intensive purposes they are. I recall seeing a F16 Blue Angel on TV. He was doing maneuvers so I sat down to watch. Came into land, dropped his landing gear, flared and taxied in. The shot was tight so no references. Kid walks over to the plane, picks it up and walks away..... WTF!!!!!

I think I read some where that the jets can reach speeds in excess of 200mph. And that is not scale, that's real 200mph.

I went on one of the sights that sells parts for these things. JetCat has an engine that wil put out 52lbs of thrust at 112,000 rpm. Runs on Jet-A1. Only weighs 5 lbs. It will set you back $5,500 CAD. The prices for these toys is off the chart. I would not be surprised if a nicely equipped one would exceed the cost of a new E class.

Some of the duct fans (piston engine with fan prop) were suppose to do close to 200 mph in the mid 90's. I have heard almost 500 mph for the turbine jets. They are restricted to 200 mph. The club I belong to, we are not allowed to fly turbines, because of the speed potential. Some of my sport planes are probably capable of a little over 100 mph.
