Exclamation *** Bambi Veal anyone? ***

Yup...just left the company X-mas party...going 10mph SLOWER than posted...a *FLASH* of brown by the driver's side front wheel and the unmistakable look of "OH5HIT!!!!!I'MRUNNINGINTOTHESIDEOFAVEHICLE!!!" and the sound of "BUHDUMPTHWAP!" and I look into the rearview mirror and I see this shadow flopping furryass/legs a-skew...

I slowly back up...watching the dimly street-lighted shadowed feature attempt to get up and flop back to the pavement...in the middle of a two-lane country highway. I pull over to the guard rail and maneuver backwards around the deer...a little nubbin' buck, no taller that 3.5' at the shoulders and less than 100#s...he's wobbly...head-shot with the truck and bleeding from the mouth. I can't see any broken legs...yet.

He's not making any sounds, but trying to upright himself and attempting to stand...which he can't. He's still acting like a sucker-punched fighter attempting to beat the 10-count...and he's hearing "...7...8...9..."

I'm on the phone with the Sheriff's Office...letting them know a deer is down, I'm OK and where I'm at. They'll dispatch an officer right away (slow Friday night...eh?).

Now, Bambi is attempting to stand up...and he makes it...but once up...he's frozen...he can't seem to see/hear anything going on from the left side. But he's managing to head the correct direction and move towards the closest edge of the road. He hops over the guard rail and stumbles down the embankment and sits on top of the snow...just waiting. Finally, the Sheriff's Deputy shows up and Bambi has managed to struggle through the snow just far enough that we can't seem to locate him with our flashlights from our location on the road. But, we hear him attempting to walk through the snow and drifts just out of our flashlights' beams' reach.

The deputy figures that IF Bambi does manage to make it through the night, he'll be one lucky little buck, but he's not taking any bets.

We check the truck...the lower part of the driver's door and the box in front of the left rear wheel are buffed and there's some deer hair jammed between the tire's seal and the rim's edges. I'm told that if there's anymore damage that's not evident tonight, I'm to call it in and they'll stop out and let me write up a report.

We head for our respective vehicles to get out of the damp 15° coolness of the evening...fortunate in the fact that I didn't outright kill the little bugger and wipe out the front end of the S-10.

And, fortunate in that the Deputy didn't have to put Bambi "down" with a terminal case of non-Chinese Lead Poisoning.

I heard that the neighbors don't take too kindly to "fireworks" on a non-holiday evening, either.

This isn't starting out like it's going to be a good weekend...

I don't believe we did...just the usual gun/deer season and then there's the pre-gun bow and arrow and do believe after the gun season there's black-powder and bow/arrow once more.

As for the HO, yep, two times already I've hit 'em with the same truck. $5800 the first time and $3300 the 2nd time. This one is a "car-wash" and nobody is the wiser. Except the tire-jockey...when I have him shave the rim...

If a deer jumps out in front of my vehicle and I hit it, I will make sure the demon dies a slow and painful death with the rock salt i have in my trunk if the bastard is still alive.

Absolutely hate those animals and my stupid hippie run college has an enormous doe problem. Kids hit the damn things all of the time. I wonder if insurance companies can sue landowners of large properties with huge deer populations.

They are rats, I would have shot it and thrown it in the back. My dads friend cooks them up.

Sorry folks...I guess I wasn't very specific in what I was driving...It was the "daily driver" - the S-10. The "344K" S-10...

I took the 2 Benzes off the road as soon as the county starting spreading the seasoning on the roads a few weeks ago in anticipation of winter.
