My hands are starting to get scars from working on my car. I can name every one. Kind of fun to tell each one at a drunken, "I'm more beat up than you!" argument at a bar

First one I have is a recent cut right under my right index finger nail. I was trying to roll the power steering belt onto the pulley and my hand slipped and I cut it right on that stupid windshield washer bracket.

You are occassionaly going to get injuries if you do things. Just as long as you are not what is commonly reffered to as accident prone.

Self disipline in working methology does help avoid a lot of scrapes. also there are many guides available on what not to do. Some wear and tear will still occassionaly happen though. Just the price of passage.

Its life.

I used to have quite a few, working on bikes and cars, but after some adverse reactions with automotive chemicals, solvents and fluids, I'm a surgical glove under Mechanix work gloves shop guy.

I thought this was about to become a "Ive got a bigger one than you " thread !!

My hands are covered with small car working scars, so many I cannot remember any of their origins. My first two knuckles on each hand are oversized scar/callouses.

The two distinctive scars are both on my left thumb and both are cutting wounds.

The first I sustained about 3 am working on a model for Architecture school. I was cutting cardboard for a model using an exacto knife and a plastic straight edge. The blade came loose and turned toward the straight edge and climbed the plastic edge and neatly sliced the end of my thumb off...a slice about the diameter of a nickle and about 3/16" thick at the thickest point. A small hinge of skin remained. My partner on the project drove me to the hospital where they sewed it back on and bandaged it. I returned to his house to continue working on the project. Before it was healed I hit it at least two or three times with a hammer while working part time as a carpenter and opened the wound again. Ouch!

The second is on the same thumb but down near the base of the thumb. This time I was cutting some ceramic tile apart with a utility knife and it caught the corner of a tile and rode over my thumb cutting it to the bone. This one got a half dozen stiches and I managed to let it heal without busting it open again.

The first one felt like I had a thick leather glove on the tip of my hand for abotu 20 years but now the nerves seem to have grown through and I have the same feeling as on the right thumb.

I also have significant scars on my right hand, upper lip, both knees and my left shin from using poor judgement while riding a motorcycle.....the shin also involved margueritas....

The closest i came to dying while working on a car involved a ramp and jacking accident while working on my 52 Pontiac ambulance which I ran onto a ramp then jacked up the front allowing it to roll off the ramp toward me....luckily there was just enough time to jump to the side to avoid being crushed between the bumper and the wood cabinets at the end of the garage....actually I probably would not have died but I would surely have been hurt badly.

Being much less agile now and much more careful I have not received any really bad wounds for a decade or so.....(probably should not make such bold statements!)

x2, I am a changed man after using mechanix gloves with nitrile underneath. I did my entire 300SD engine/trans swap without even scraping a knuckle thanks to Mechanix gloves. I do wish that a lot of those work gloves were solvent/chemical resistant but then I imagine your hands wouldn't be able to breathe.

you want scars? try changing an engine in a late 90's chevy blazer.

That looks to be a twin to mine! Same light pods, same color, same color roof! Mine was pretty rusty though. It had the same frosted pattern in the side rear windows too!

The sound of a straight eight is very distinctive.

That thing is a beast! I wonder how long the crankshaft is on those straight eights. I'll bet that the cross section of one is pretty massive to keep it from flexing too much.

If you can remember how you got each scar then you don't have enough yet! I hate gloves and would rather get cut or smashed than try to work with them on. Kinda like rubbers for your hands- sure there is the protection aspect, but it just feels better without them!!
