Funeral for a 56 year old friend

I went to a funeral this morning of a former employee. This fellow was the husband of the lady who watched all of our kids when they were little. Their family was pretty entwined with ours since they had two kids who grew up with ours.

When I bought my first historic commercial building I hired him as a handy man and fix it man there. Together we figured out how to fix things for about 8 years or so.

He was very good with wood, doing some very nice carvings of birds and fish (I have a couple of his fish) and at one point built three cedar strip canoes in the Peterborough style.

After leaving me he had a variety of jobs never seeming to be happy anyplace very long. He did have a substance abuse problem I think.

He was divorced from his wife about ten years ago.

He had diabetes pretty bad and died from some sort of heart attack or bleed it appears.

the funeral was very centered around the army with the service conducted by a chaplin. His oldest son is now a career army man.

I learned a lot about him that I never knew. That is why attending funerals is always rewarding, you learn things you might not learn any other way about your friends.

My friend designed the funeral to the last t his girlfriend said.

The final song was one by Neil Young. I really like Neil's music...very thoughtful and interesting musiaclly. I found it an interesting contrast that my friend chose a military funeral and played a song by one of the most anti war musicians of our generation.

Sorry to hear about your friend. I really like Peterborough canoes. There is a fantastic canoe museum in Peterborough.

sorry about this. Regarding the dichotomy bewteen Army and antiwar, hard to explain, but lots of Army folks are antiwar, its just that we know sometimes somebody's gotta do it. I am Army to the core and love NY, Grateful Dead, etc.....Jungian duality of mankind thing

"Jungian duality of mankind thing" that is a great scene in Full Metal Jacket with the Colonel asking Joker which side he's on, etc.

Tom, condolences to you and your friend's family. I work in the funeral trade, and we bury roughly 2000 folks a year, so it's easy to become cold and impersonal. When I read or hear about how these people lived, and the lives they touched, it brings my empathy back, and I'm more able to help the families we serve. It helps me remember that they aren't just a case number, they are people who are loved and will be missed.

Take good care of yourself in the new year.
