Morrison believed that constant drinking would dull the senses and lead to a state of "enlightenment" - a life without barriers or parameters. From the outside, he looked like an idiot. Gotta love the morons of the '60s and their stupid idealism.

How does Bill Murray fit into all this, btw? Did I miss a drunk Bill Murray video?

Actually, he just had a problem with alcohol (and probably some type of mood disorder). But your story is more entertaining.

in the video, JM has a little of the Carl Spackler going on.

I didn't know JM said that about booze.

Psychedelics drugs maybe, but alcohol?

Anyhow, I always figured he was alcoholic. Didn't have much to do with politics.

As I recall (it's been a while since I read his bio), he had some bad experiences with drugs so he just drank (a lot). There are some pretty amazing stories about the quantity of booze he could put away. As far as I remember, his politics was mostly limited to be being pissed off at his father (an admiral, I believe). The guy had issues.

I recently saw a two hour special on the doors and Jim on PBS (IIRC). Back in the day I always thought their music while very strong a bit limited by Morrison's lack of vocal range. (about six notes was his full range it seemed...him an Nancy Sinatra). While listening to the songs on the special I came to appreciate that even though his range was limited he brought a lot of interest to the way he manipulated his voice.

Pretty good music.

A pretty sad screwed up person.

Apparently, he was a pretty intelligent guy but he had a pretty screwed up childhood (his father was a navy admiral and he took off at a pretty early age). At some point he managed to become a film student in CA. It sounds like he formed the band to make a living when he was living on the beach. It would have been interesting to see what he could have done if he had managed to survive.
