RIP Kodachrome
This week Eastman Kodak officially ceased production of Kodachrome 25 and Kodachrome 64 Slide film in all format sizes.
It is like losing an old friend. My first color images were shot on Kodachrome and prior to the introduction of Extachrome it was the only Kodak slide film available to the amateur market. All of the WW2 color combat footage was on Kodachrome, at least 1/2 of the NASA archives are Kodachrome, Many early TV shows (Cisco Kid for one) were shot on Kodachrome 16MM even though most TV's were B&W (Cisco Kid was first all color western show way before Bonanza). I pulled out a set of images of Monument Valley that I shot in 1972 with a Leica IIIB my Dad brought back from WW2. They have not faded. The color is still breathtaking. Right and Left Mitten still look awesome. They still look like the day I got them back from the processor. My Nikon D90 at 12.5MP does not even come close. Paul Simon was right "Nice Bright colors, It gives us the dreams of summer and makes all the world a sunny day...Oh yeah" |

Wasn't the story that the last lab that processed the film closed? Eastman stopped making it back in 2009.

Kodak stopped making the chemicals latchear a d the last processor had enough stuff to run until the end of last year. I wish I had shot a roll of kodachrome. Now I will never had that opportunity.

I thought Kodak stopped producing still photography film in 2002 or 2003?

I always preferred the colors of Ektachrome when I shot color film. But, I no longer use film for color.

Ektachrome chemistry allowed for a "push" while Kodachrome chemistry was pretty much set at 24 or 64.

When I was cleaning out my late grandfathers attic I found a few hundred slides(all in slide holders). All of them Kodachrome.. They are now in my closet and I have only viewed a few cases and the color is amazing.

Yup, and I never really liked the Kodachrome color pallette, it always seem over-saturated (but not as bad a fuji). Of course, I'm mostly a B&W guy.

My mom has all my dad's slides at her house (about 40 years worth). I keep planning on buying a good negative scanner and getting them uploaded someplace where the extended family can see them. It will be white the project, I'm thinking about hiring my daughter to do all the scanning.

I've got a well-maintained R-3 processor and a fine Durst enlarger. I don't have any dinosaur bones.

We just had my grandfathers slides from the 30's and 40's put on DVD.
Technology advances, now its all memory cards.

I haven't decided if I want to pay a couple $1000 for a decent scanner and do it myself or just have it done commercially. I would like to have the scanner for future use, but I don't know how much I would use it.

Memory cards are great until you forget where you put them.
