No car insurance, Sir?

Recently, in the City of Dallas, Texas, they passed an ordinance that if you are pulled over by law enforcement and not able to provide proof of insurance, your car will be towed right away.

Afterwards, to retrieve your car after being impounded, you must show proof of insurance to have your car released. This has made it easy for the City of Dallas to remove uninsured cars that are typically driven by mostly illegals.

Shortly after "No insurance" ordinance was passed, the Dallas impound lots began to fill up quickly and were full after nine days. Most of the impounded cars were driven by illegals.

Not only must you provide proof of insurance to have your car released, you have to pay for the cost of the tow, a $350 fine, and charged $20 for every day their car is kept in the lot.

I would suggest other cities across the nation to follow what Dallas, Texas is doing. Not only is it getting uninsured drivers off the road, but it is taking away vehicles driven by illegals that have no insurance that might endanger your life.

Dallas' Solution Get them off the road WITHOUT making them show proof of nationality. Wonder how the ACLU or the Justice Department will get around this one.

Quite common over here - however they often depend on databases and number plate recognition software that isn't always up to date - so you get impounded even with insurance. There has been quite a stink about this in the UK...

Every year, 50,000 people are KILLED on America's streets and highways by LICENSED and INSURED drivers.

Oh brilliant! I have my insurance card with me at all times as well as one card in the car. I like this idea.No insurance, no car. Why should I have to pay hard earned money and fear for my life if some uninsured person or illegal hits me.

I'm in favor of getting uninsured drivers off the roads; I could not care less if they a "legally" in the country or not.

Eh? What's that all about? If they are driving a car without the correct insurance then they are not doing something legal - surely? Or is this one of those diplomatic immunity problems?

That's fine, I pay plenty of insurance premiums and I would prefer not to have to pay my deductible due to being hit by an uninsured driver. My wife was (barely) hit in the 240D by an uninsured driver a few months ago. It turned out to be a $200 paint-less repair (a very tiny dent), which was well below my deductible so I just paid it myself.

Insurance? That's for wussies and Chicken Little types. Why, if I get lit up one Friday night and plow my 1987 Buick Electra into a parked car or two, I'll just pry the license plates off my car and get a 1988 Electra tomorrow.

They'll just go out and buy another $500 car and keep on truckin'.........meanwhile the impound lots will fill up with beater cars whom no one will ever pay the storage fees on.......

Then, the impound lots will hold an auction and sell the cars to used car dealers who will then resell them to the illegals.......

I'm just saying that I don't care about "illegal immigrants" but I do care about uninsured drives. The original post made it sound like this was a backhanded way to harass "illegals."

I think an insured person should be allowed to haul in uninsureds and then when they get insurance you get a reward and that goes towards your insurance premium. Lowering it with every capture.

My son's previous car got hit by an uninsured driver in a truck. Fortunately I was not there or I'd be in jail now for assault.

Think there might be some good buys on older uninsured MBs?
