My friends dog is dying from bad dog food ,walmart brand.

The Old Yeller brand sold at a Krogers store in the Woodlands area .The vet gave them a grim outlook on recovery .The food comes from the Sams club ,aka walmart brand and is poisened by a mold from water getting into the food from the factory, the vet says. The dog ,bella, is a boxer and was owned by the family for some 5 yrs .Shes still fighting but getting skinnery after loss of weight ,the owner feels it will be time when the dog lets him now ,this sucks.

Old Roy dog food LOOKS horrible and is the very cheapest (by far) sold. I could see someone feeding it to junkyard dogs but anyone that would buy it for a family pet needs to, uh, learn a lesson i suppose. Sad that the dog is the one to suffer.

That really sucks. That's why my dog eats better quality food than I do.

Vet cannot comment on how many cases hes seeing alone in just this area.Cheap is one thing but to allow a product unsafe on the consumers shelf is another .Kind of like you eating fastfood and saying you should of read the recall on that hamburger,oh well .

The best low cost canned dog food I've found for my German Shepherd is the Pet Smart house brand, it's comparable in price to crap like Old Roy, etc, but it looks like good food and the dog loves it. Slightly more expensive, Pedigree canned food also agrees well with him. He gets a standard can of wet with four cups of dry Purina Premium a day. Shepherds have sensitive stomachs, if the food is crap they get instant diaherria. I put a lot of work into finding the best food at the lowest cost, because he goes thru dog food like a drunk goes thru liquor.

I hope your dog makes it, best wishes on his recovery.

True. My condolences to the OP and best wishes to his friend. I'd say it is a crap shoot. We have been feeding them Eukanuba for years and they have been healthy but even that has had a salmonella recall.

I guess we will have to stick with the top brands unless they start to become a problem since there will be no fix to this issue that is 100%

Isn't most of the crap at Walmart made in China? And isn't most of the crap that is made in China unsafe, dangerous, or down right deadly? I don't trust anything that comes from Walmart or and division of Walmart.

Doesn't this same issue come up on a pretty regular basis? If you're going to have a pet, you ought to be prepared to take proper care of your pet. Apparently, that would mean NOT buying their food from Walmart.

Problem is that a lot of the stuff is done under "private label". How to track it all the way back is the difficult part. A business we have set up does private label work. It is used so that if you, the retailer ever try to back track it so that you find the supplier to cut out the middleman, you hit a dead end. A lot of our stuff has a US label on it. Well, my company is a US company and we have the right to print it on the label because in that part of the world, US products command a premium. However, the product we sell the Vietnamese is made in other places under our label.

Good point, Aklim. OTOH, I am amazed that we can track hamburger all the way back to the ranch the cow was raised on. I guess that isn't true for everything. If I remember correctly, one of those dangerous products was Iams dog food, which is not a cheap brand at all.
So, based upon your point, what is a consumer to do, Aklim?

Ah, but Sir. Uncles Mao and Ho aren't as cooperative as people get when the USDA or FDA starts persecuting them. In China and Nam, I can stonewall you so much easier and cheaper than you can do here. Take a simple example. When I managed a check cashing place, the IRS Currency division lady came down, flashed her badge and wanted to see my records. She told me that she knew we cashed $10000 in checks, withdrew $8000 in cash, collected $1000 in Western Union money so where did the $1000 come from. She even knew it down to the penny. We had to justify how we came about the extra $1000. Obviously made up numbers but you get the point. First week on the job and I get an audit. In Nam, we get a monthly audit by the IRS. They tell you in simple english "I cannot allow these deductions but if you give me $500 cash, I will allow you to expense them all and my expense fee.". At the end of the year, the annual crew does the same thing. Like the mob, there are the real set of books and the showcase books. The accountant is a VERY powerful man in the company and has to be handled carefully. It's not impossible to do it here but way much harder. When the street cops make $400 a month, they are on the take. Here, much more is needed.

Iams is their lower line vs Eukanuba which is their higher end product. IMO, the best way is to keep with the upper line and try to watch out for any tricks. It is NOT foolproof but better than nothing.

Not gonna get into a brand war type discussion, because bad things can and do happen up and done the price chain.

The one point I'd like to add is that dogs and cats weren't built for eating grain. Seems most of the issues with tainted/moldy/bad pet food have been related to the grain in cheaper foods (mostly corn).

Our zoo gets grain free - and we can pretty clearly document the overall savings by keeping a couple of the cats (prone to urinary tract infection/crystals) and both of the dogs (prone to general GI disasters) outta the vet's office by feeding them grain free.
