Hey gals/guys

have you ever met or talked to a person who uses big fancy words when they talk to you? I have, and in my almost 50 years on this earth have found that those type of people are pathetic. Before you pass judgment on me, consider this I have seen many of these so called smart people come and go in my line of business. The down to earth people has prospered while the "Big" word people fail time and time again. Wonder why that is?

P.S. I don't fault young people for using "Big" words, they are just emulating what they learned in school/ College.

Clk,
Interestingly over here they introduced a law that requires consumer agreements to be in simple English. If you cant understand the BS then it cant be enforced.

Smart people are smart enough to play dumb. Like during a business transaction. Act like you know little or nothing can often net a better deal because the seller does not see that you recognize the full potential value.

No, not deceit. Business, profit and opportunity!

If someone is selling a gun and he sells it to a collector he knows he will get top dollar and he also knows the collector really should know how much it is worth. But if he thinks he is selling to a novice and really want to get rid of it, he expects to get less and will take less.

Deceit would be the buyer insisting to the seller that he could not get more than X dollars even though he is pretty sure he can and the buyers knows it. And maybe the buyer even shows some "proof" on paper (forged) that he could not get what he wants.

I'm not sure I would put it that way, but communicating efficiently means saying what you mean in the simplest possible way. Technical jargon is efficient when you are speaking to someone who understands the jargon, but not when speaking to a layperson. When I hear someone using unnecessarily complex language I assume they are trying to be deceitful or are compensating for their own insecurity. I don't trust people who are always trying to prove they are "the smartest guy in the room." The actual smartest guy is usually the one who is saying very little.

Maybe you really mean intelligent people.
A "smart" person is generally a smart ass.

An intelligent person has sufficient communication skills so as not to try & belittle some one by using big words that most have never heard of.
I find smart asses generally dont have much self esteem & only use all the BS language to try and make them self look big. Often they dont know what the words mean.

I use "big" (i.e., unusual) words when I feel they capture what I'm trying to say more effectively than the "down to earth" word. I love vocabulary and language; it has nothing to do with elitism. It has to do with creativity and artistic expression. And sometimes it has to do with accuracy. The only thing that irks me is when someone tries to use "big" words and uses them incorrectly, or inappropriately. Which is most people who try to use
"big" words.
That's just floccinaucinihilipilification of the English language.

FWIW, most of the vocab I use, I did NOT learn in college. I learned it from listening, reading, watching ... Alfred Lord Tennyson, Pink Floyd lyrics, a conversation with a stranger. Things that are poignantly worded just stick with me.

NO!! it's about treating your fellow person the way you would want to be treated in a business deal. Try it. you might find that you will make more money than you thought.
