Tracing an e-mail to a specific computer?

This is for you computer experts. I have a friend who had her e-mail account hacked and an e-mail sent out as if from her. How easy is it to figure out exactly what computer was used to send that e-mail?

Not easy depending on circumstances. Every computer has it's own IP address but wether or not the e-mail will retain a record of that IP on it I'm not sure, others will be able to say. However, usually in any network computers have dynamic IP, which means that they do not necessarily retain the same IP address all the time. Though depending on who long a particular IP address is "leased" by the server and how often a computer re-applies for such an address it could be that the PC retains the same address for extended periods. I'm sure there are others who can chip in more expertly than me.

You can look at the email header and find out the IP address of where the message originated. Do an lookup of the owner of the IP and report them.

Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: It depends.

First step: Google "How to read an email header", and begin there.
