Fight a Speeding Ticket?

I just got my first speeding ticket today in a small town in Vermont. 50 in a 30. $179 and 3 points. I've been driving for three years and have an untarnished record. No accidents, never been pulled over. Guy caught me on radar, but I didn't see where he was. Didn't get much warning, I saw the speed limit sign, let off the accelerator and then the speed limit went right back up.

Has anyone here fought a ticket? Should I fight it?

What would 3 points do to your insurance?

Attorney.

A lot of little towns do that, that's how they make money. Total BS speed traps.

But since they are little towns their equipment isn't always up to snuff, etc.

I was definitely speeding, the guy's got me there. 50, however, after recounting a bit, I think was faster than I was actually going, so if I could prove something like that the laser gun wasn't correctly calibrated or something, I might be able to get it thrown out.

Not sure how much it'd boost insurance.

Can't afford an attorney.

Not sure if the driver's ed education is worth it, but worth looking into it.

Around here if you have a clean record you can go to the prosecutor's office and do what is called a "diversion". You basically pay some extra fine and are put on probation for six months or a year.

If you don't get caught again it will disappear. If you get caught speeding again in that time both go on your record. I have done them about a dozen times over the last 20 years. I am not sure what they would do with 20 over, but if the prosecutor is not connected to the municipality that issued the ticket they could recognize it as a speed trap and still work with you.

It's worth a try.

The speed limit suddenly changed on the same stretch of road?

There are trap towns out there, not sure of any in Vermont but people have mentioned that those small VT towns are notorious for ticking people from out of state.
