Watch out nfor gas thieves at the gas station

I checked my credit card today after paying it off yesterday and found an extra charge from a gas station where I stoopped. The charge had been clocked after I had left the gas station, which means it was made by the only person who could make it-- the clerk.

AMEX took care of it and now I am going to have a chat with the gas station manager and tell him that he has lost my business. I'm also telling him I'm going to the cops and I have put his name on the Net for doing this.

We'll see what happens.

How did the clerk get your CC info? You swipe them at the pump?

Well come on Strelnik, look after your friends on PP & let them know where the station is. A little name & shame is needed.

It's also possible some outside theives have installed a card reader to steal your cc info. They even make card readers that will transmit info to the theives (wireless), so they won't get caught attempting to retrive the device.

I think im going to start prepaying inside.. Apparently card skimming at pumps by major interstates in FL is rampant. I live right off of a major interstate.

My credit cards have no pin number, on signature plate it says "photo ID required" .
It sounds like in Strelnik's case a second charge was placed on the card just after the first. This suggests it was not third party skimming. The clerk has a bit to answer for.

A little more details please.

How could it be possible if you swiped the card at the pump? If you left the card with the clerk and he blatantly charged 2 times then he is up to no good or he made a mistake. He was forging your signature for small $ amount of gas? It does not make sense as the audit trail is all there.

May be you want to let us know you use AmEx card? . Everybody has AmEx anyway so no big deal.

I agree, this was just someone adding an extra charge to the card after he left.

My wife's debit card was apparently cloned, the bank called earlier this week and told us someone had attempted to use it someplace in KY. She's now waiting for a replacement card.

Be sure you close out the transaction when you pay at the pump.

Several times I have pulled up to the pump and seen "Would you like a carwash?" on the display, obviously from the previous guy's credit card transaction. Always get a receipt. That way you know the transaction was completed.

Sorry I won't use pay at the pump.
I know they have gotten better, but last I heard not 100%.

When I was in the industry, one of my teams wrote the code that runs on the card readers, and the pump readers.

The transaction from the pump readers is not fully encrypted as is the transaction from the in store readers.

I have also found several cards in or on the ground right in front of the pump readers. Just in the past year or so, too easy to forget.

This is what I think too.

That was it. It's 7 degrees, the printer is out of paper and I DID clear it at the end.

AMEX already knows.

This is a Citgo station I went to, because I was really low on gas.

Now, no more business. PLus I will see the manager tomorrow and scare him.

Today, we got great advice from a bank teller. She noticed that we had an account that allowed us to open multiple accounts without charge, so she suggested that since we use debit cards a lot, we should open a second checking account tied to a new debit card in addition to the one we currently have. So, through electronic transfer, we can fund the "everyday" card from the primary checking account. If the everyday card gets skimmed, then the potential loss is limited to the low balance.

Note also it could (could) be an innocent mistake.

I had one years ago, went through my regular station, it was very busy.
They ran my card twice, and did not run the other guys.

I went into the station and the owner looked it up, he had both charge slips, but one was not my signature. He just gave me the cash back, and said he knew guy that signed the other slip.
He did get the money from the guy.

My charge slip did say second transaction, but I thought it was from the wife who did get gas there earlier that day.

I repeat though it 'could' be an innocent mistake
