Fiberglass as an undercoating?

I think someone mentioned this to me in another thread..that or I was thinking about it on the way to work today..

Any thoughts on this? I can get a 8 square foot repair kit for like $30

I've never worked with fiberglass stuff before but I know they use it on boats and such and it should make a pretty good water barrier...

I'd be using it on my 300SD Project, on top of my existing list of coatings and such...

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=288453

Just a thought...

fiberglass has a few negatives along with it's high strength and low weight . . . it is prone to vibration cracking/stress since it is rather rigid; and like most resin based products tends to be temperature sensitive, being more pliable in warm and more bittle in cold

The crudd from the auto parts store is crudd, period.

It doesnt matter thoug because even if it was good quality --polyester doesnt want to bond with ---anything really. epoxy resin will stick much better if you had the car on a rotissorie and could prep the bottom properly--grind away all traces of asphalt based undercoating-road slime-oil etc , but after a while it would start peeling at the edges.

Considering how much old motor oil I have stocked up, I'm tempted to start spraying the underside of my benz with a thick coat of motor oil to prevent rust.

I know this is probably not the most environmentally friendly thing to do, but i'm tired of rust.

Thanks for the opinions guys, I've decided its not worth it lol. My current methods of undercoating will be adequate.

okyoureabeast,

I've heard of people doing. I've also hear people use some stuff called Waxoyl..

I also heard good things from the Canadians about a place called Krown...

I think theres a similar place near Buffalo.

Another guy said he had good result with this stuff:
http://www.kellsportproducts.com/aboutfluidfilm.html

http://www.fluid-film.com/
I havent looked at that FluidFilm stuff too much..

Just a few things I've come across over the years.

I have used bar & chain oil in the past; it's stickier, and hangs on a bit longer than motor oil.

There are "recipes" for DIY Waxoyl floating around the internet. My old MGB GT had been treated with it (real Waxoyl) and it seemed to do quite well!

whatever you do don't use wd-40.a buddies dad is the worst for trying to stop rust.he once coated the top of a car with blackjack roofing tar.which actually looked pretty cool.up until the 100 degree days when it started to run down the sides.sprayed the inner fenders of his IH pickup with wd-40 and i swear within 2 months the hood hinges feel off from all the rust.tried oil on the fenderwells and pretty much about the same results.

The WD . . . water dispersant, not rust inhibitor.

I am a longtime fan of POR15--been using it for close to 20 years.
