Music collection from the ground up.
Well after wearing out my 128 and 160 kbps MP3's from the old Napster days and listening to YouTube videos of questionable quality I'm ready to pull the trigger and start a music collection from the ground up. Most of my old CD's are of little value either as my taste in music has definitely changed over the years. What is the best and most economical way to accomplish this now? I want to listen on my PC and my Droid X. I plan on buying 100-200 songs ASAP. Is Itunes the way to go or are there alternatives that are better or cheaper?

I've had good luck at the link below for years. I don't use a credit card, rather call in and have my account charged on my phone bill periodically. It's a Russian site but has been in business and expanding for a long, long time. It's never down, and I've never had an issue. Is it legal? Beats me, I am after all PAYING for the music, not stealing it off some torrent site. Paying? Yeah, 9 cents a song and albums for under 2 bucks apiece. Movies too, although I haven't messed with that. The albums are all european versions though, and with some artists their collection is incomplete. Poor selection of classic country and classic blues, both of which I like.

believe it or not Amazon has pretty good deals, look for sales on digital downloads.

Pearl Jam too. Nowadays, I'd rather listen to a stranger take a crap in a public restroom than to listen to anything they recorded. |

I've been mostly pleased with iTunes, but Amazon offers competitive prices and similar quality files. You can buy Apple Lossless files on iTunes for some music, which, if you have a nice enough sound system, is worth it. Some bands also offer digital files in their shop. One issue I have with iTunes is the availability of music ... i.e., they don't have non-US-release B-sides available in the US. I had to buy a lot of music direct through my favorite band's site, but other than being a bit of a pain to transfer to the computer, that worked out fine.
Also consider that many bands, record stores, or other retail outlets offer free or reduced digital albums. I've gotten some incredible-quality Nine Inch Nails material that way (their instrumental Ghosts collection is great) ... just an example, you may prefer other artists. But if you hunt around, you can find good deals and also discover new music. Of course, you can also buy CDs and rip them to high quality. Whatever you do, BACK IT ALL UP!!! Edit to add: I think you can also listen to and purchase (if you choose) music via Pandora on your Droid. You can dock it and transfer the mp3s to your PC.
