How low is too low?

Simple question related to automobile ride height....

How low is too low?

I was driving my TE yesterday, and didnt have enough space to do a proper cut over some speedbumps...

As a result, I got stuck and dented my rocker panel... :( Also had to wait 20 minutes for someone to arrive with rope to pull me loose.

Fulcrum525 01-26-2011 12:21 PM

Look in your driveway ;)

(On a more serious note, are you saying that the cars in my driveway are the correct height?)

The cars (Currently your wagon and i'm sure what you're planning for the C43) are too low ;)

The C43 is already lowered.

The wagon sits lower though.

Honus 01-26-2011 12:29 PM

To each his own, but I say that anything lower than stock is too low, unless the lowering is a byproduct of a modification that improves performance. A while back, I had a Subaru with a suspension kit that resulted in a slight lowering. The modification resulted in such a huge improvement in handling that I was OK with the lowering. In fact, it even looked good to my eye because I knew that it was a bona fide modification. Otherwise, I like stock ride height. IMHO.

The answer is you can never be too low, because you can never be too bad-a$$.

You sir, are an inspiration!

If you ever are in CA, I owe you a drink! (Or some brownies ;) )

I am still thinking about trying to get another inch lower, but its going to require some custom work to get done.

PaulC 01-26-2011 12:39 PM

You need an adjustable air suspension, like the one found in W220-and-up 4Matics. Press a button and you gain about two inches of lift.

I quit drinking and don't do drugs. Buy me a tall, cool glass of milk. I was in LA over Thanksgiving, Hollywood actually, for my brother's wedding. Far away from you northerners. :D

All my friends know the low rider
The low rider is a little higher

The low rider drives a little slower
Low rider, is a real goer

Hey

Low rider knows every street, yeah
Low rider, is the one to meet, yeah

Low rider don't use no gas now
The low rider don't drive too fast

Take a little trip, take a little trip
Take a little trip and see
Take a little trip, take a little trip
Take a little trip with me

SwampYankee 01-26-2011 01:18 PM

That of course depends on whether or not you like fixing dented panels and oil pans. ;)

Or waiting for tows :D

dynalow 01-26-2011 01:50 PM

Not lower than a 'Vette. Ya never know when that high sewer cap will jump up and bite ya in the a$$.:o
At least you weren't at an airport during "rush hour" causing a traffic jam with lots of horns honking. Airport cops don't have a sense of humor. I say this because I was in Philly at the airport yesterday where they have about 6 speed bumps in front of the arrival terminals. I think those would accomodate a 'Vette's clearance (barely!)

You did an airport run in a Corvette?

Do they even have trunk space for luggage?

No No. I don't own a vette. But I think of 'Vettes every time I ride around high sewer caps on badly engineered roadbeds.
I did the run in the gf's car, a 2011 Accord. Nice car, but light. Hard to keep under the limit. No sense of speed. Annoying tranny. seems to shift up and down all the time. At 850 miles, maybe it'll settle down after a while.
Gimme the 124C anytime!;)

Mistress 01-26-2011 02:27 PM

if it's lower than snake snot then it's too low.

There you go :D

I originally looked at an 1997 E300 before settling on my W126. One of the things I noted about the W210 was how low it seemed to be to the ground.

I've always found the W126 height to be absolutely perfect. You don't have to climb into it like an SUV yet you don't fall into it like a low-riding Accord.

Snowing down your way yet?

TheDon 01-26-2011 03:23 PM

Still repping 4x4 status, Justin?

elchivito 01-26-2011 03:46 PM

Depends. Now and then I'll see an old American street rod that's skimming the ground, or a 51 Mercury that's been chopped and channeled and think it looks pretty cool, but in general I think lowered cars are dopey looking. Especially utilitarian vehicles like station wagons and pickups. A vehicle that can't make it over a speed bump without a tow rope and body damage is pretty useless as far as my needs go.

75Sv1 01-26-2011 04:41 PM

There is a video clip of a Lambo. It inches up to a speed bump. Then a hot looking euro chick gets out with some shopping bags. I think you only see the leggs and shoping bags. Then the Lambo goes over the speed bump, and the chick gets back in. Then the car drives off.
Maybe just low enough.
Tom

It handles amazing.

Its lowered quite a bit over stock. There was a 4-5 finger gap when stock, but now, its tucks tire.

I would do air bags, but the handling just will not quite be as good as it is now.

I love being able to throw the wagon into corners, and come out of them at a decent speed.

Yeah, manhole covers are a bit scary.

Potholes are also unknown/scary territory. They like to jump up and nab the undercarriage.

Stock W126 ride height is fail for looks.

Its only one speedbump so far, and my cars been lowered for about 8 months.

Not bad.

The lowered W126 looks very silly. Maybe it works on a ricer, but not on those.
