US Evangelicals alleged to be complicit in death of Ugandan gay activist.
NAIROBI, Kenya — David Kato knew he was a marked man.
Multimedia Related * The Lede Blog: Before His Death, Ugandan Gay Rights Activist Explained Hostile Climate (January 27, 2011) As the most outspoken gay rights advocate in Uganda, a country where homophobia is so severe that Parliament is considering a bill to execute gay people, Mr. Kato had received a stream of death threats, his friends said. A few months ago, a Ugandan newspaper ran an antigay diatribe with Mr. Kato’s picture on the front page under a banner urging, “Hang Them.” On Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Kato was beaten to death with a hammer in his rough-and-tumble neighborhood. Police officials were quick to chalk up the motive to robbery, but members of the small and increasingly besieged gay community in Uganda suspect otherwise. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/28/world/africa/28uganda.html?_r=1 The evangelicals involved with Ugandan legislators are associated with The Family, a Washington DC based lobbying group and sponsor of the National Prayer Breakfast that provides housing in DC for a number of US Congressmen.

What is the point? We have a thread on this page decrying the absurd Sharia law in Aghanistan where adulterers are stoned to death, while US Christian fundamentalists are traveling to Africa to encourage legislators to impose the death penalty for homosexuality. Our own politicians are cosying up to these same US theocrats.

Homos are just too out of hand these days expecting special treatment and attention.
I don't condone murder but they just need to put up or shut up. I'm just tired of their $h!t. It seems you can't change the channel without one turning up glorifying their twisted and perverted life style. What's next? Are we going to have to accept those who have sex with animals too?

I am guessing the legal concept of the 14th escapes you. It clearly says that all citizens (not just the ones you like) must be treated equally under the law. Whether you like something or not is not any more important than a warm pale of spit. So I suggest you get over your own self-righteous self and move on. Gays are not going back in the closet and they will not be treated like second class citizens. They are not trying to steal your kids or make you gay for that matter. They do not care about you. I am pretty sure they despise you as much as you despise them. Leave them alone, treat them as equals. You can also drop the animal sex BS. Animals do not have the ability to consent and the the argument is just insulting to anyone with half a brain cell. I am pretty sure that gays and those who agree with them re sick and tired of your s!h!t as well.

Americans’ Role Seen in Uganda Anti-Gay Push http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/04/world/africa/04uganda.html It's gotta be true, cause it's the NYT also. So, three....un, deux trois...guys show up at a conference in Uganda in 2009 Last March, three American evangelical Christians, whose teachings about “curing” homosexuals have been widely discredited in the United States, arrived here in Uganda’s capital to give a series of talks. A month after they leave, some Ugandan pol, introduces this Anti-Homosexual Bill of 2009. Donor countries, including the United States, are demanding that Uganda’s government drop the proposed law, saying it violates human rights, though Uganda’s minister of ethics and integrity (who previously tried to ban miniskirts) recently said, “Homosexuals can forget about human rights.” Instead, Uganda seems to have become a far-flung front line in the American culture wars, with American groups on both sides, the Christian right and gay activists, pouring in support and money as they get involved in the broader debate over homosexuality in Africa. Back to the 3 Amigos... they claimed they were duped! The three Americans who spoke at the conference — Scott Lively, a missionary who has written several books against homosexuality, including “7 Steps to Recruit-Proof Your Child”; Caleb Lee Brundidge, a self-described former gay man who leads “healing seminars”; and Don Schmierer, a board member of Exodus International, whose mission is “mobilizing the body of Christ to minister grace and truth to a world impacted by homosexuality” — are now trying to distance themselves from the bill..... I feel duped,” Mr. Schmierer said, arguing that he had been invited to speak on “parenting skills” for families with gay children. He acknowledged telling audiences how homosexuals could be converted into heterosexuals, but he said he had no idea some Ugandans were contemplating the death penalty for homosexuality. Mr. Lively and Mr. Brundidge have made similar remarks in interviews or statements issued by their organizations. But the Ugandan organizers of the conference admit helping draft the bill, and Mr. Lively has acknowledged meeting with Ugandan lawmakers to discuss it. He even wrote on his blog in March that someone had likened their campaign to “a nuclear bomb against the gay agenda in Uganda.” Later, when confronted with criticism, Mr. Lively said he was very disappointed that the legislation was so harsh. Human rights advocates in Uganda say the visit by the three Americans helped set in motion what could be a very dangerous cycle. Gay Ugandans already describe a world of beatings, blackmail, death threats like “Die Sodomite!” scrawled on their homes, constant harassment and even so-called correctional rape. Many Africans view homosexuality as an immoral Western import, and the continent is full of harsh homophobic laws. In northern Nigeria, gay men can face death by stoning. Beyond Africa, a handful of Muslim countries, like Iran and Yemen, also have the death penalty for homosexuals. But many Ugandans said they thought that was going too far. A few even spoke out in support of gay people. The title of this linked article is little supported by facts in it. "Americans' role"...is tenuous at best. Seems to me anyway. The dots are small and so distant that trying to connect them seems a leap of faith...or personal opinion. ************ Back to the link in the OP. Ms. Kalende was referring to visits in March 2009 by a group of American evangelicals, who held rallies and workshops in Uganda discussing how to turn gay people straight, how gay men sodomized teenage boys and how “the gay movement is an evil institution” intended to “defeat the marriage-based society.” The Americans involved said they had no intention of stoking a violent reaction. But the antigay bill was drafted shortly thereafter. Some of the Ugandan politicians and preachers who wrote it had attended those sessions and said that they had discussed the legislation with the Americans. Is there a cause and effect relationship here?? Let's say there is. Is that sufficient to allege complicity? "US Evangelicals alleged to be complicit in death of Ugandan gay activist." Seems like a stretch at best to me. At worst?... What got this man killed was African bias and hatred of homosexuals, which has roots in many parts of Africa. http://worldfocus.org/blog/2010/02/02/evaluating-the-treatment-of-homosexuals-across-africa/9513/ These 3 doo gooders had nothing to do with it. Fwiw, I don't have a dog in this fight. If gays are the "******s" of Africa,as one of these articles suggested, discriminated, persecuted and murdered, that is wrong and must be changed. Ain't gonna happen overnight though. Just like slavery and racial bigotry here didn't and hasn't happened overnight 235 years and counting. My criticism is with a lot of what is passed off today as journalism and accepted as fact. Seems healthy skepticism died a while back along with common sense. |
