As Egypt goes offline US gets internet 'kill switch' bill ready

Even as the administration urges Egypt to turn the internet back on, back in the USA.....

Is it any wonder people of all ilk are paranoid?

I generally come down on the side of open communication - OTOH, mob mentality, mob fever is not necessarily a good thing.

Some of what's happening in Egypt is likely good and necessary and along with that is chaos and a ransacking of the town.

Watch and listen CAREFULLY about what's going on in the world of Radio and Television right now.

Under the guise of "...NOT ENOUGH BROADBAND AVAILABILITY..." the F.C.C. is trying to further compress the television band down to only 30 channels nationwide (2-31) from the current setup of channels 2-51. And we have THAT MANY NOW because of the excuse of "public safety concerns" and the like...that's why you still had some TVs sitting around that had dials going up to either "69" or even older units that went up to "83."

It's all about "controlling the message" and that's it.

If you're able to ONLY get your source of information from either the satellite or cable, that means you have to PAY to get what they want you to have.

Don't pay on time? You're unplugged.

If someone doesn't like the message, then there's that many FEWER spigots to try to turn off.

Free OTA Television is simply that. Free and Over The Air. No one to turn off your information. More, free choices available to you.

But, if the wonks at the F.C.C. get their way, it may look good, but there will be less of it...or less choices available in all areas of the US.

As for being able to shut down the internet...why would we, as the USA, ever have to consider something like that?

Exactly how many "free" channels are there in the US right now? I'm not aware of a single one.

The implications are that cyber crime and terroism can use a new medium, the internet, to attack the US. This is not as far fetched as some think. The US has already attacked Iran witht he Stux net worm via the internet, such attacks can certainly occur both ways assumin the other side gets the smarts to do so.

And then of course there's alwyas the idea that the administration in power might find it necessary to declare a state of national emergency and try to shut down awkward comms. Cant's envision a situation that could justify that kind of reactoin myself myself, but only a fool pretends to know the future.

Is there really still bandwidth being wasted on broadcast TV? Who is watching it? I don't even think I own anything with a tuner anymore. Why don't we just use morse code?
