Why would you need an AM/FM tuner anymore....

I installed the iheartradio app onto my iphone, and it streams all of the radio stations that are in my area... (Well, at least the ones that play stuff worth listening to!)

This is going to make my next round of modifications better! I can add shaving my radio antenna to the list of things when I get the bodywork done!

davidmash 02-01-2011 02:44 PM

I have not turned my radio on for years. I have one of those FM transmitter things for my car. I transfer MP3's to my thumb drive and listen to them in the car. I can fit about 130 songs on my 1GB stick. More if I choose lower bit rate. I listen to exactly what I want to hear and not what someone else thinks I want to hear.

dynalow 02-01-2011 02:48 PM

Die Hard?

Some things never die.

My old Fisher 220T (circa 1967) is in the garage with the old box speakers, one on each side. I blast em when I wash the car or Harley on Sat mornings. Still blows your ears off. :D:D
Bought shipboard thru Navy Exchange. 2 months pay iirc. ;)

MTI 02-01-2011 02:49 PM

My visor BT device syncs to the headunit via an unused FM frequency.

Local road condition broadcasts are on AM in many locations.

Discovering new stations in other towns while travelling is like a box of chocolates . . .

I end up getting tired of the songs I most liked (past tense) if I play only my existing catalog. It's hard to find good music on the radio, it's true - B-Town has KPFA, the original listener supported radio station and they sometimes have some pretty interesting music - music I hadn't heard before.

I mostly listen to NPR on the car radio anyway. Why would I run down my phone batteries listening to the radio when I have an ELECTRICITY GENERATOR built into my auto?

thorsen 02-01-2011 03:08 PM

I have not listened to terrestrial radio in about 7 or 8 years. I started listening to Sirius but I dumped them after the merger. Now I stream Pandora through my iPhone to the car radio. When I need a change of pace I listen to an internet station that I am fond of.

Honus 02-01-2011 03:19 PM

I have a nice FM radio in my shop. Great background noise, especially during baseball season.

elchivito 02-01-2011 03:49 PM

Other than listening to those communists on NPR, I can't imaging using a radio for music.

MTI 02-01-2011 03:52 PM

Oh noes, Tom & Ray are commies?

DC's version of KPFA is WPFW. I guess that "PF" in the call letters must mean something. WPFW has a wide variety of interesting music and plenty of left-wing political talk. Amy Goodman's "Democracy Now!" show is often pretty good. I send them a few bucks every year.

tbomachines 02-01-2011 04:17 PM

I've been streaming DI.fm through my iphone or straight from a 32GB USB drive. I don't even have the antenna hooked up in my car. The only radio I really listen to is NPR and it comes in without an antenna

okyoureabeast 02-01-2011 04:21 PM

I actually use the radio from time to time mostly for NPR.

However nothing beats Pandora, Nobex Radio Companion, and my own mp3 collection

cscmc1 02-01-2011 04:41 PM

Most of the satellite radio systems, FM transmitters, etc... sound like crap -- not that most FM radio stations, with all their compression and whatnot, are exactly high fidelity. NPR sounds good most of the time.

I find myself listening to NPR news or AM talk (WGN) most of the time. During baseball season, it's all WGN for Cubs coverage (though it's going to be tough now that Ronnie's gone).

MTI 02-01-2011 04:53 PM

Speaking of baseball, I do use the radio during EPSN Sunday Night Baseball to get away from Joe and Jon's blather.

Honus 02-01-2011 05:00 PM

It's ridiculous how the TV baseball commentators blather on.

I enjoyed Chip Caray and Steve Stone. One time during an abysmally awful Cubs game, they had a protracted discussion about whether a gerbil or hamster really qualified as a pet. They actually left for a commercial break and came back the next inning still discussing hamsters, the game was so bad. Loved it.

Some commentators can pull it off, others can't. One example of a broadcast team that talked constantly and pulled it off great were Frank Herzog, Sonny Jurgenson, and Sam Huff, my favorite broadcast team of all time. They used to do the radio broadcasts for the Redskins. Sonny and Sam are still there, but for some idiotic reason only the Redskins could conjure up, Herzog was replaced. The new guy is good, but not quite as authentic D.C. as Herzog was. Sonny and Sam are constantly getting digs in on each other - it's a classic quarterback/linebacker battle. Great stuff. Jurgenson is particularly good.

HD might sound alright -- I have not bothered to buy a receiver yet -- but the satellite stuff (XM/Sirius) sounds crappy when playing music. It's fine for news/talk/sports.

I agree. I almost went with the subscription to Sirius, but didn't care for the sound - always sounded a little muffled in the cars I listened to it.

HD is free (for the time being) and you get alternative channels HD1, HD2 and sometimes HD3 on stations - some commercial-free. I had some issues getting my HD set up, but found it was a worn antenna cable in my 124 wagon. Once fixed, the issue was resolved. With two additional adapters, I can use an iPod with full functions on the head unit, or the 3.5mm jack for my Droid and listen to downloaded podcasts, music or Pandora.

layback40 02-02-2011 07:17 AM

There are a heap of people in North Queensland that are examples of why to have an AM/FM radio. When all your high tech communications are wiped out by storms Bigger than Katrina, the old AM/FM radio is the last thing working.

Craig 02-02-2011 07:22 AM

Radio is almost as dead as comercial TV, I haven't used my car tuner in about 4 years. I just stream audio from my iPhone to my car (music, podcasts, audio books, NPR app, pandora, etc.). The 240D has an old iPod permanently installed in the glove box.

Craig, radio may be dead in your home and car, but listener numbers are up across the country. What has changed is the total number of hours that people listen. One of the largest growth areas has been public broadcasting, increasing their listening audience by 50% since 2008.

I subscribe to several public radio podcasts, that way I get to listen to them on my schedule; I have no need to listen to the broadcasts anymore. I honestly don't think I've heard a live radio in 3 or 4 years.

Yup, that's what works for me. Also, I don't care about watching live sports so I don't need live TV/radio.

I love radio. NPR, local progressive-rock stations, AM talk radio, classic rock FM. Maybe when I make it to the big leagues I can get Sirius.

PastorJoe 02-02-2011 12:50 PM

This thread has shed alot of light on things. With all these people listening to National Peoples Radio, it's no wonder that we're getting more and more eaten up with Socialism in this country.

It's amazing that there are so many people gullible enough to listen to that Commy blather.

I believe that's what's called freedom, as insured by a Constitution that protects aspects of expression and the press. What a great country. We, the people, get to turn the dial.

You are absolutely correct; this country is no longer suitable for good old fashion, god fearing, real americans. All the real americans should pack up their bibles, guns, and white robes and move far, far away (to someplace far, far away) from all this filth where they are free to hate all the inferior beings that have polluted this once great country, just like god intended. Did I mention that they should move far, far away?

pj67coll 02-02-2011 11:03 PM

The only time I listen to radio is in my car. For me it's just two stations. Both NPR. Classical music on KBAQ and News/current affairs on KJZZ. PastorJoe, if you actually listened to something like NPR you might actually learn something.
