Eric Clapton did it for 3 years back in the early 70's. And he emerged a stronger/cleaner/more focused individual.

Of course he took his Monster Smack habit with him when he went into isolation.

But he left it behind when he finally decided he was ready to come out.

Human beings are creatures of habit, and self discipline is the hardest thing to teach a human.

Sometimes we need to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask.."Why do I do these things to myself"

I don't think it's a matter of liking to interact or not. For me, dealing with real people and their baggage and issues has over the years become really tedious. I like to share ideas, and find I can do that from my keyboard and whenever I decide to cut it off, I can. Largely communicating with people I don't know and never will, I don't take most of their issues to heart and like that just fine. My livestock make more sense to me than most people do, and I frankly prefer their company most of the time. I have a very few close friends who I see fairly often, but they know I vanish from time to time and understand. Customers who buy animals and products from us know that the guy who owns that ranch is a bit of a curmudgeon. They can deal with that if they want prize winning show stock, a good horse or a side of decent meat. The only time I feel the least bit guilty is sometimes when I know the Missus would like me to go to one of her foo foo arty parties with her and I refuse. Sometimes I just have to suck it up and small talk with boring people for the good of the order.

It's all about maturity. Most of the people I work with are intelligent but very immature. One has tantrums, one's like the class snitch, another is a racist, another is just well, not with it. A coupe are quiet, and I respect them, only talking with them when I need to, and we get along well. One can never shut up, another has an inferiority complex that he hides with passive aggressive behavior. One is a nerd.

On the other hand, the women are GREAT. They are all over 30, most are married, polite and really what you would call "cultured." They have manners, a sense of humor and are nice to work with, even when life is tough around the lab or the office.

I have volunteered to do a lot of extra work to expand my job and my personal promotion possibilities, so I am always busy. It makes the day go by fast and I get a lot done.

The problems only appear when one of the people come in, the kind that make me want to become a hermit.

Fortunately, the phone rings so often, most go away.

Not a perfect job, but I love my work. It's as much fun as wrenching on diesels and sometimes it includes that.

I've always liked being by myself - I don't mind eating my myself (like most people) - I think I'd do fine as a Hermit. I'd rather not go to any social gatherings that my wife participates in... I do it for her, that' about it. I just enjoy solitude - I know some people find that strange.

I once watched a PBS show on Dick Prakeke (sp?) - Alone in the Wilderness - about a fellow who spent over 35 years in Alaskan wilderness by himself - I kind of wish for that for myself... I'm sure I'd find it more difficult than I can imagine... but I do find that prospect appealing and dream about 'escaping' there from time to time.

I saw that PBS show on the fella' up in Alaska - an amazing story. There are still a handful of folks like that, but numbers are diminishing. This gal, Susane Aikens comes to mind. Very interesting bear attack story...

I know a guy named Bill Porter (pen name is Red Pine or Chi Song in Chinese) who has spent a considerable amount of time with Chinese hermits from the Zen tradition. He makes his living translating Chinese Buddhist writings etc. .

Anyhow, the idea is appealing but I always get the feeling that folks are running away from their problems. Sure, there are problems living alone, but people problems can teach you a lot about yourself. Best not to run away.
