Did away with land line 8 years ago, I so cool.

Monitored home security sytems often rely on land line access, unless you've gone wireless.

Years ago.....

I'm thinking about eliminating the phone jacks in the new houses and just running data lines instead. I don't want to take the jump though because a lot of my buyers are pretty traditional. When I build my own house I'm not going to install them.

When I moved into this house a year ago, I did not get a landline. I haven't missed it at all.

engatwork 02-03-2011 10:36 PM

I can't get the haul butt internet connection without having the phone unless there is something else out there.

I'd just run lines from some point, where the phone / internet connection would come in or the breaker box, to a central point in the house where you can put a wireless base station and wireless router.
We have 7 computers, just the 2 of us.
3 Servers, one is new to replace one.
2 workstations, one wireless, one I need a solid connection.
2 Laptops, both wireless although one is an antique and hasn't been used in 6_ months.

I've wanted to dump the land line for ages, wifey won't.
I'm gonna try and get one of those XLink's and see if I can convince her with that.

No way... cell phones are too unreliable, at least in this house.

mgburg 02-04-2011 03:58 AM

I need the POTS for the DSL...and it's a perfect BU when the cell (work-supplied) decides to puke...I get, MAYBE, two bars maximum when the sun is shining and the wind is coming from the west. Otherwise, the cell is completely worthless.

I've stripped all extras off the POTS so it's only good for dialing local calls...no intralata, interstate or even "8xx" numbers. 7 digits or you get disconnected. You need information to look up a number? Dial it on your cell...anything that costs extra on the phone other that being plugged into the wall has been stripped. And the bill for that service is only $25/month.

Having the DSL added is a "grandfathered" amount around $23.00...so the total phone bill with DSL (and all the fees/taxes) comes to approx. $51/month.

Dropped mine last year and no issues.

My land line was through my cable provider and this not really a landline but a VOIP.

If you can keep them working. I dropped my land line 4 years ago. Had problems very year. The last time Verizon told me it would be 19 days till they could get to me!!! They don't want to maintain land lines. I have an acquaintance that retired from Verizon and he even told me that they do not want to deal with land lines. So the satellites my fail, but it the landlines are not going to be maintained what is the difference.

Thanks for the input, guys. Signal strength isn't an issue in central CT so I don't have that excuse. I've got U-verse for TV and internet so I don't need it for that either. And between my wife's, my son's and my cell it shouldn't be hard to reach us in an emergency.

soothappens 02-04-2011 12:39 PM

If you don't pay the bill............they make that decision for you!:D
At least Verizon does.

Two years now and don't miss it one bit.
The only phone that actually worked was an old rotary
and the only ones who called on it where telemarketers.

I think it's funny that one of the proposals being floated to address the depletion of unique internet IP numbers . . . party lines!
