I'm not sure those more elaborate shovels would work on the snow around here... (or would only be effective within the first few days after a snowfall)

The first few inches of snow closest to my roof was almost like ice, the next layer was wet and the top layer was granulated. The only thing that worked was a simple snow rake - I had to chop at it in order to get down to the roof.

The only thing that worked on mine this year was actually getting up on the roof with a plastic shovel. I spread about 40 lbs. on the ice dam at he edge and left it to do its work.

We've had 56"+ fall, already the 5th snowiest ever, and we've still got 2 mos. to go. We've had a handful of roof collapses/day for the last 2 wks. here in CT.

Silverthorne, CO...

My buddy and I shoveled the snow off the roof of our house in Silverthorne, CO last Sunday - you couldn't use a roof rake if you tried-there was over 5 ft of snow hard packed on top of the roof... we shoveled for 3 hrs... then went ice fishing... Wish I had taken some photos.

My roof is too steep. Snow is 80% removed (took 3 hours), but now the ice dam removal guy is coming out in a few days. $200/hr which is the best price I could find and he was recommended by a local hardware store.

Fortunately, not an issue here.
