knife-wielding madman who killed four in NYC

A good reason for NYC to either ban knives or allow it's citizens to carry guns to protect themselves....

As soon as we come up with a laser that will cut a piece of meat in half. (It doesn't specify what types of knifes he used, for all we know they were basic kitchen utensils.) It's a good thing that psycho didn't have a gun or it could have been even worse.

That is a truly horrible story.

Knife control now!

Seriously, if you've ever seen the knife skills of most home cooks, you'd begin to understand why home cooking is nearly extinct.

So if I bring a gun and you bring a knife to a fight, do you think we are on a even playing field?

I would say no.

Most knife fights start and end with someone being stabbed without warning.

that would depend on how close I was to you and how willing you were to use the gun. an unlikely situation for either of us, but suffice to say that, the guy with the gun is not always on top in these situations.

Is it easier/quicker to kill multiple people with a gun or a knife? How about if you are not right next to your target? If you are in a room with 10 other people and a thief comes in. Would you rather him have a gun or a knife?

Guns and knives are not equal in their ability to kill. Guns can kill more people quicker and in a larger area than a knife can. To say other wise is foolish in my opinion.

A knife will almost always defeat a gun unless it's a long gun. Now, a gun with bullets.....

Guns don't kill people, PROJECTILES kill people. Don't ban guns, ban bullets.

Guns and knives are not equal in their ability to kill. Guns can kill more people quicker and in a larger area than a knife can. To say other wise is foolish in my opinion.
It would be easier to kill multiple people with a gun, speaking at the lowest common denominator. Knives are effective weapons in singular combat up to about 21 feet away, when the opponent is either unarmed, or armed with a weapon put is not ready to deploy it. A person with an edged weapon can move across that 21 ft in less than 2 seconds and strike a blow. Given the assialiant's ability, there is about a 90% chance of that being a fatal or mortal blow.

The odds change when closer in (improve) or if the attacked is ready to deploy his weapon (gun) and is willing to use it without hesitation (lessen). In a room full of armed people, a kife weilder becomes a nice target after the first blow is struck. Again, that all depends on the ability of the gun wielders to fire. In a crowded room, they are likley to strike another and that will reduce the effectivity of the armed response in that it may be delayed or less effective. That will give the knife weilder another chance to strike.

If one defends against a knife attack, and is ready, the first strike fatal blow potential is greatly lessened. The defender, however, must be prepared to suffer wounds, and be ready to strike back immediately. It is nasty business.

There are many variables to close quarter combat: there is no real formula, except use whatever you have at hand to kill your opponent.

Knives are the weapon of choice for many serial killers, along with strangulation and drowning. Firearms are too noisy.
