Anybody hear about this bizarre case in NY? Nancy Genovese arrest/lawsuit
http://www.longislandlawyerblog.com/mother-of-3-arrested-for-taking-pictures-of-tourist-attraction-at-airport
The lady is arrested with a shotgun and assault rifle in her car, 500 rounds of ammo, and $13K in cash, allegedly to pay for her kid's tuition later that day, while taking photos near an NG base. Held for four days, allegedly abused. Sues the town for $70 mil - may win owing to bungling by the city. Now I read that she's a FEMA detention camp activist, thought the base was a detention camp. Just weird.

What is an "assault rifle"? Is it illegal? Was the ammunition legal? Was the money hers? Is it illegal to take photos 'near' a National Guard base?

Agreed, I need more details that aren't out of a police press report. Almost as stupid as "alcohol related" accidents statistics by police. I had 1 beer and got pulled over. BAM alcohol related offense.

Did you do anything other than read my words? There's more to the story than that. That's why I provided a link and why God gave us Google.

^ ^ Not sure who 'you' is but speaking for myself, I read it. And I read a number of other articles about it. It's a tad pathetic, IMO. My take is that the lady was so persuaded of the true-blue goodness of her patriotic fervor that anyone who might find her behavior odd or potentially threatening is in the scum of the earth category.

Her lawyer's account sounds like a child's gibberish collection of contrived excuses. If this lady actually extracts $70 million from a municipal govt. in this time of strained budgets, it will be a sorry statement about our society.

One report I read stated that signs were posted forbidding still or video filming around the helicopter and base. Ah, here it is:
http://www.27east.com/news/article.cfm/Westhampton/225871/Woman-says-trespassing-arrest-at-Air-National-Guard-base-was-misunderstanding Major Williams pointed out that signs located next to the helicopter read “the use of cameras or video equipment is prohibited,” and explained that the ANG prefers that no one take photos of the base. He said that if anyone is caught taking photos without prior permission, they will be questioned by base officials. No, the guns, ammo, and money were/are not illegal. The weapon of Hassan what's-his-name was not illegal prior to his taking it on the base and killing a bunch of people. She admits that she had been questioned once before while hovering around the base. Allegedly she was told to stay away, she reportedly denies that. Imagine if she had been Jihad Jane 2.0 casing a US military facility. Further that she carried out an attack. A whole different bundle of outrage would be directed at Southampton police in that case. Ass wipe Richard Poplawski also feared FEMA detainment camps and killed 3 Pittsburgh police officers who had the audacity to try to protect the public from him. Whose deep pockets are the families of those three men going to sue? If the treatment she received is as she alleges - which I doubt - she is due some compensation. $100K absolute max IMO. My guess is that her account is heavy on the drama queen side. Her behavior was highly suspicious. She said she'd been target shooting - her hobby - earlier and that's why she had the guns with her. And while doing that she carried $13K in cash with her in order to later pay tuition? Who does that? Not sure she told the cops that - it's in her attorney's presentation. Sounds heavily contrived to me. Given her persistent casing of the place, the cash and weapon combination could easily be read as the tool-kit of someone planning an attack and escape.

Did she do anything illegal?
It seems like a typical over-reaction by authorities followed by the typical over-statement and over-reaction by the tort lawyers always eager to grease their palms at the taxpayers' expense. Is this new? Where's the beef? |
