Thumbs down cell phone/electronic messaging device ABUSE spiraling out of control.

It seems to me in the last few years it has gone totally crazy! Personally, I think phones should be for short, curt, or urgent or emergency NEEDED information exchange. That is pretty much it.

I hate phones pretty much, and always did, and with these cell phones, abuse of them has spiraled totally and utterly out of control, with people considering ANY incoming phone call an absolute summons that MUST be answered no MATTER what they are doing.

To me the worst example I EVER heard was from a friend of mine, that told me her b/f was a contractor that carried his phone everywhere all the time and ALWAYS answered, no matter what.

Bemusedly, I said, "Well, supposing it was an intimate moment, does he even take the thing to bed with him?"

And she said, "Always !!! If we are making love and the phone next to him rings, he ALWAYS answers it."

I couldn't believe it. Luckily for HER, she recently got rid of the loser. He is still trying to get her back, but fortunately, she won't succumb to his endless barrage of pleas. And phone calls. And emails. And Texts.

I think cell phone use has made the world crazy. I have one, but ONLY for road trips to far away places. Usually leave it turned off and at home. People everywhere jabber on them all the time, obliviously walking into busy intersections, driving, pushing shopping carts, at the movies, theatres, resturants, everywhere, bumping into people and objects, not paying attention to anything..

I read recently (I think in the National Geographic) that even in the shanty towns of Calcutta, now, starving beggars and families ALL have cell phones. Many of them, even have multiple cell phones.

My date for the big concert on New Year's 2010 was a fairly typical addict. She answered her cell every 5 minutes for the whole date. I asked her to please leave it in the car at one point but she flat out refused. So her teen daughter, at home who knew EXACTLY where she was, called her every 10 minutes with the express intent to RUIN the date. It worked.

I "friend-zoned" that woman.

*****

And at the stroke of midnight, the band struck up a version of "Auld Lang Syne", and urged the audience to join in and sing with them.

Few did.

Instead, dozens and dozens of people whipped out cell phones to call and text their friends or whatever.

The world has gone utterly insane.

So ... it's been lovely;

Now please excuse me while I go and SCREAM..

kthxbi

I still chuckle at the incident caught by the mall seciruty cam where the clueless female shopper exits a store with her head down immersed in texting and seconds later trips into the mall water fountain pond!

Serves her right!

Hey, you kids get off my lawn.....

A phone is just a tool, it can be helpful or it can be a PITA.

It drives me up the wall when I'm having a conversation with someone and they start texting, I think that's the height of rudeness. My friend does it all the time and I tell him to cut it out.

It seems to be acceptable to a large number of people in my generation to totally ignore the people you are with and text.

I'm quite tempted to install a jammer at my house.

When I see a SLOW vehicle on the LEFT lane, chances are they're either yapping away on the phone or buried deep into texting.

I'm surprised people don't get blue teeth as a symptom of too much phone use

There are 2 girls in my class (mind you, this is a graduate program, not mickey mouse undergrad) who CONSTANTLY text. Honestly I hope they do not get their degree because they don't deserve it if they are not willing to put up with 3 hours of meaningful discussion about a topic they allegedly have enough interest within which to pursue a graduate degree. Other than that, it only irks me when you are talking directly with somebody and they whip out their phone, or people texting while driving.

The last few movies I've attended there seems to always be a cell phone yakker/popcorn muncher sitting in the seat directly next to me, behind me or in front of me. Unless it is a really great film that HAS to be seen on the big screen, I wait until the DVD comes out.
