Jews and atheists on the afterlife

http://www.jewishjournal.com/bloggish/item/hitchens_wolpe_harris_artsen_and_the_afterlife_excerpts_20110222/

Hitchens doesn't look like he has a foot in the grave in the video.

It doesn't make any difference none of us will know until it is all over. If your belief in an afterlife is important you and makes you a better person than go for it, but please don't decry me for not believing in your fairy tale.

Hitchens has some interesting comments near the end. He is being treated by Francis Collins, a well known evangelical doctor/scientist and Director of the National Institutes of Health who sequenced Hitchens personal genome in an attempt to find a cure for his cancer. It sounds as if they are getting along.

I seem to vaguely remember picking the green lantern as my favorite comic book hero, did he have a cool looking classic car?

Are you thinking of the Green Lantern as in Hal Jordan? The first Green Lantern, Alan Scott might have one but I didn't go back that far. Before my time. I think you are thinking of The Green Hornet. There are a few Green Superheros. Green Hornet, Lantern, Arrow come to mind.

I think the idea of a deity is to force you into some sort of compliance with the law of the land. Think about this. While we have CSI that alludes to the idea that we can catch and punish all crime, it always doesn't work out that way. Say 100 years ago, before forensic science was this advanced, it was easier to evade the justice of man. Evade it long enough and you are dead and you got a freebie. With the afterlife, it threatens you with a punishment for your crimes if not a double jeopardy. If I kill you and escape man's justice, I'm home free if there is no afterlife. With an afterlife, if I am not punished here, I will be punished there. If I get caught, I will get punished here and there.

This allows people to dismiss the insults to them by saying "Well, Karma will catch up to him.".
